Saudi Arabia secures third term presidency of the Aviation Security Committee, emphasizing commitment to aviation safety and international cooperation.
Saudi Arabia has recently achieved a significant milestone by securing the presidency of the Aviation Security Committee for the third consecutive term. This decision came after a unanimous vote by member states during the 40th committee meeting, which took place at the Arab Civil Aviation Organization’s headquarters in Rabat, Morocco. This development highlights Saudi Arabia's crucial role in the aviation sector, both regionally and globally.
The Saudi Press Agency reported that this reappointment reflects the Kingdom's ongoing commitment to enhancing aviation security and its proactive approach to addressing challenges in the industry. Mohammed Al-Fozan, the executive vice president of the General Authority of Civil Aviation, emphasized the importance of fostering collaborative efforts among Arab nations to ensure the safety and security of aviation transportation. He noted that maintaining open lines of communication is vital for upholding the highest safety standards.
Since becoming a member of the Arab Civil Aviation Organization (ACAO) in 1996, Saudi Arabia has actively participated in various initiatives aimed at supporting the organization's goals. The Kingdom has been involved in the executive council and technical committees, demonstrating its dedication to improving aviation security and safety across the region.
In addition to its leadership role, Saudi Arabia's civil aviation sector has experienced remarkable growth. In the first half of 2024, the number of passengers soared by 17 percent, reaching an impressive 62 million. This surge is attributed to the increasing demand for both domestic and international travel. Furthermore, the number of flights rose by 12 percent, totaling 446,000 during the same period. Air cargo traffic also saw a significant increase, with a 41 percent rise, amounting to 606,000 tonnes.
These advancements align with Saudi Arabia's ambitious aviation goals, which include tripling annual passenger numbers to 330 million and expanding connectivity to over 250 destinations from its 29 airports by 2030. The Kingdom is also focused on increasing its air freight capacity to 4.5 million tons annually. The General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) has reiterated its commitment to supporting global civil aviation through various initiatives, including deploying experts to work with specialized organizations and hosting the permanent headquarters of the International Civil Aviation Organization’s Cooperative Aviation Security Program for the Middle East.
Moreover, Saudi Arabia's contribution of $1 million to the ICAO under the “No Country Left Behind” initiative underscores its dedication to fostering international cooperation in civil aviation. This commitment not only enhances the Kingdom's standing in the global aviation community but also contributes to the overall safety and security of air travel.
Saudi Arabia's continued leadership in the Aviation Security Committee is a testament to its proactive approach and commitment to enhancing aviation safety. As the Kingdom works towards its ambitious goals, it is clear that its efforts will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of civil aviation, not just in the region but across the globe. The ongoing developments in Saudi Arabia's aviation sector serve as a reminder of the importance of collaboration and innovation in ensuring safe and efficient air travel for all.
