A 72-year-old American faces trial in Moscow for allegedly serving as a mercenary in Ukraine amid ongoing conflict.
MOSCOW: A significant legal proceeding has commenced in Moscow, where a 72-year-old American man is facing trial for allegedly serving as a mercenary in Ukraine. This case has drawn attention due to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which has seen numerous foreign nationals involved in various capacities.
The man, identified as Stefan Hubbard, is accused of participating in the armed conflict on the side of Ukraine. Reports indicate that he moved to Ukraine in 2014, a time when tensions were already escalating in the region. The U.S. embassy in Moscow has acknowledged the situation but has refrained from providing further details due to privacy concerns.
During the initial hearing at Moscow City Court, the judge granted the prosecutor's request to detain Hubbard for six months, citing concerns that he might attempt to flee. This means he will remain in custody until March 26, 2025, with the next hearing scheduled for the following Thursday. Under Russian law, participating as a mercenary in an armed conflict can lead to a prison sentence of up to 15 years.
In a video that surfaced on YouTube in May 2022, a man claiming to be Stephen James Hubbard stated that he was living in Izyum, a city in the Kharkiv region of Ukraine. He mentioned that he was born in Big Rapids, Michigan, and had moved to Izyum in 2014. The video depicted him in a disheveled state, with a long beard and unkempt nails, which has raised questions about his well-being during his time in Ukraine.
According to the prosecutor, Hubbard signed a contract with a Ukrainian territorial defense battalion just a day after Russian forces entered Ukraine. He was reportedly compensated with a monthly salary of at least $1,000, received training, and was provided with a uniform and weapons, which indicates a serious commitment to the conflict.
Hubbard's detention occurred on April 2, 2022, when he was apprehended by a Russian soldier. This incident is part of a broader trend, as Russia has detained several American citizens in recent years on various charges, including espionage and criticism of the Russian military.
This trial not only highlights the complexities of international law and the consequences of foreign involvement in conflicts but also raises important questions about the safety and rights of individuals who choose to engage in such situations. As the world watches this case unfold, it serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between personal convictions and the legal ramifications that can arise from them.
