World Leaders Support Lebanon Ceasefire Amid Regional Tensions

In a significant development, world leaders have expressed their support for a ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, which took effect on Wednesday morning at 0200 GMT. This ceasefire is seen as a crucial step towards stabilizing the region, particularly in light of the ongoing tensions fueled by Iran-backed Hezbollah. US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized that this agreement aims to protect Israel from threats posed by Hezbollah and to foster conditions for a "lasting calm."

In a joint statement, Biden and Macron stated, "The announcement today will cease the fighting in Lebanon, and secure Israel from the threat of Hezbollah and other terrorist organizations operating from Lebanon." They also committed to ensuring that this arrangement is fully implemented and pledged to lead international efforts to strengthen the Lebanese army.

Biden characterized the ceasefire as "good news" and indicated that the United States would also pursue a truce between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza. Macron added that the ceasefire in Lebanon should pave the way for an end to the conflict in Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed gratitude to Biden for his role in securing the ceasefire. He noted that the duration of the ceasefire would depend on developments in Lebanon and that it would allow Israel to increase pressure on Hamas while addressing the "Iranian threat."

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati hailed the ceasefire as a "fundamental step" towards restoring regional stability. He thanked both France and the US for their involvement and reiterated his government's commitment to enhancing the army's presence in southern Lebanon.

Iran, a supporter of both Hezbollah and Hamas, welcomed the ceasefire, with foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei stating that Iran firmly supports the Lebanese government and its people. Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri expressed appreciation for Lebanon's right to reach an agreement that protects its citizens and expressed hope for a similar resolution in Gaza.

China also expressed its support for the ceasefire, with foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning stating, "We support all efforts conducive to easing tensions and achieving peace and welcome the agreement reached by relevant parties on a ceasefire." German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock described the deal as "a ray of hope for the entire region," emphasizing the desire for genuine security on both sides of the border.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the ceasefire "long overdue" and highlighted the need for it to evolve into a lasting political solution in Lebanon. EU chief Ursula von der Leyen referred to the ceasefire as "very encouraging news," noting its potential to enhance Lebanon's internal security and stability.

While the ceasefire has been welcomed by many, a top UN official cautioned that significant work remains to ensure its successful implementation. UN special coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, stated that both parties must demonstrate full commitment to the agreement.

Jordan and Iraq also voiced their support for the ceasefire, urging the international community to take urgent action to end the war in Gaza. Turkey expressed its readiness to assist Lebanon in establishing internal peace, while the Palestinian Authority welcomed the ceasefire and hoped it would contribute to regional stability.
