FBR modernizes tax collection by integrating real-time data with NADRA, enhancing compliance and broadening the tax base in Pakistan.
The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has taken a significant step towards modernizing its operations by incorporating real-time machine-to-machine data integration with the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA). This initiative aims to enhance the efficiency of tax collection and broaden the tax base in Pakistan. By linking with other major organizations that hold crucial data on financial transactions, the FBR is positioning itself to better monitor and manage tax compliance.
In its report for the fiscal year 2023-24, the FBR has emphasized the importance of technology and data analytics. The use of continuous monitoring through dashboards allows the FBR to keep a close eye on tax-related activities. This proactive approach is complemented by a strong nudging campaign, where the FBR has been sending SMS and WhatsApp messages to high-profile unregistered individuals, urging them to file their tax returns.
To further encourage compliance, the FBR has launched a media campaign promoting the Malomaat portal, which serves as a platform for citizens to easily file their returns. The FBR has also signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with 28 different departments and organizations, facilitating the real-time transfer of data and information. This collaboration is expected to streamline processes and improve the overall efficiency of tax collection.
Additionally, the FBR has revamped the Maloomat portal and introduced effective tools like Tax Ray, which are designed to assist field formations in their operations. The establishment of 145 District Tax Offices (DTOs) is another crucial development, as these offices are specifically tasked with broadening the tax base and taking action against non-filers.
A special committee has been formed under the leadership of the Chairman of NADRA, comprising senior officials from both organizations. This committee is responsible for making recommendations on how to effectively broaden the tax base, and the FBR is actively implementing these recommendations.
The FBR's integration of real-time data with NADRA marks a pivotal moment in Pakistan's tax administration. By leveraging technology and fostering collaboration with various organizations, the FBR is not only enhancing its operational capabilities but also promoting a culture of compliance among taxpayers. As these initiatives unfold, it is crucial for citizens to stay informed and engaged in their tax responsibilities, as this ultimately contributes to the nation's economic stability and growth.
