SSGC introduces geyser charges, causing confusion and complaints among consumers without geysers in Pakistan.
As the chilly winds of winter begin to sweep across Pakistan, many households are preparing for the season by ensuring their heating systems are in top shape. However, a new development from the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has left many consumers scratching their heads and reaching for their wallets. The company has recently introduced additional charges on gas bills under what they are calling a 'geyser campaign.' This initiative involves the installation of conical baffles in geysers, which are designed to enhance energy efficiency and reduce gas consumption.
Despite the good intentions behind this move, it has sparked significant dissatisfaction among customers. Reports indicate that SSGC is imposing an extra charge of Rs2,085 for these conical baffles. The situation has become particularly frustrating for many consumers who have received bills reflecting these charges, even though they do not own geysers. This has led to widespread discontent, especially among millions of SSGC customers who find themselves unfairly burdened by unexpected fees.
In light of the growing public outcry, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) stepped in to clarify the situation. OGRA confirmed that the installation of conical baffles was approved to improve safety and help consumers save on gas bills. However, they also stressed that those who do not have geysers but have been charged should file complaints with SSGC. An OGRA spokesperson advised affected consumers to reach out to SSGC directly to address any discrepancies in their bills.
SSGC officials have responded to the backlash by asserting that the installation of conical baffles was based on thorough surveys conducted to ensure proper installations. They explained that these surveys were necessary to justify the charges, which were implemented only after receiving regulatory approval from OGRA. For customers who feel they have been wrongly charged, SSGC has encouraged them to visit their nearest Customer Facilitation Center (CFC) to lodge complaints and seek resolution.
The inclusion of conical baffle charges in gas bills has certainly stirred up a hornet's nest among SSGC customers, particularly those without geysers. While both SSGC and OGRA defend the initiative as a step towards safety and efficiency, the reality remains that many consumers are left feeling confused and frustrated. It is essential for consumers to stay informed and proactive in addressing any issues with their bills. By voicing their concerns and seeking clarification, they can help ensure that their rights are upheld and that they are not unfairly charged for services they do not use. In the end, open communication between consumers and service providers is key to resolving such disputes and fostering a more transparent relationship.
