J&K Bank and KPDCL collaborate to offer affordable loans for solar power, promoting renewable energy adoption in Kashmir.
In recent times, the push for renewable energy has gained significant momentum across the globe, and Jammu and Kashmir is no exception. The region is now witnessing a notable shift towards solar energy, thanks to the collaboration between J&K Bank and KPDCL (Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited). This partnership aims to make solar power more accessible to domestic consumers through interest-friendly loans, thereby promoting the use of rooftop solar systems.
Under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy's (MN&RE) flagship scheme, J&K Bank has introduced guidelines that allow consumers to cover the full cost of their rooftop solar (RTS) systems upfront. This initiative is particularly beneficial for households looking to adopt solar energy, as the scheme offers a substantial subsidy of 60% for plants with a capacity of up to 3 kWp. A spokesperson from KPDCL expressed optimism about this development, stating that it would significantly encourage residents in the Kashmir Division to embrace solar energy.
Consumers who have registered on the National Portal can now easily apply for loans through the Jan Samarth portal or by visiting their nearest J&K Bank branch. The process is designed to be straightforward, with a minimal beneficiary contribution of just 5% required for a plant up to 3 kWp. This means that more families can afford to invest in solar technology without facing overwhelming financial burdens.
For those interested in larger systems, specifically RTS plants ranging from 3 kWp to 10 kWp, a margin money deposit of 10% is necessary to secure an upfront loan from J&K Bank. This tiered approach allows consumers to choose a solar solution that best fits their energy needs and financial capabilities.
As of now, over 3,253 domestic consumers in the Kashmir Division have formally applied on the National Portal, with 1,182 selecting vendors for their installations. Impressively, nearly 200 consumers have already installed solar rooftops, contributing to a total installed capacity of 748.07 kW. The KPDCL spokesperson is hopeful that with J&K Bank's involvement, the number of consumers opting for rooftop solar systems will see a significant increase.
Moreover, the scheme offers a central and union territory subsidy with an upper ceiling of Rs. 94,800, which will be adjusted against the loan once the solar plant is commissioned. This means that consumers can expect their Equated Monthly Installments (EMIs) to be reconciled accordingly, making the financial aspect of adopting solar energy even more manageable.
It is worth noting that other nationalized banks, such as SBI, PNB, and Canara Bank, are also providing similar loan facilities. This competition among banks is likely to motivate more consumers to consider solar energy as a viable option for their homes.
The collaboration between J&K Bank and KPDCL marks a significant step towards promoting renewable energy in Jammu and Kashmir. By making solar power more accessible through friendly loan options, this initiative not only supports the environment but also empowers consumers to take control of their energy needs. As the world moves towards sustainable energy solutions, the residents of Kashmir are now better equipped to join this global movement.
