Karachi Metropolitan Corporation Introduces Payment for Underground Water

The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has announced a significant change for residents of Karachi, starting August 1. Individuals in Karachi will now be required to pay for underground water as part of a new initiative by the KMC. This decision involves the installation of digital water meters throughout the city to monitor water usage. The meters will be placed in various establishments such as shops, restaurants, schools, hotels, and factories, as well as in large residential buildings like apartments and housing societies. It's important to note that individual houses are currently exempt from this new payment system.

This move is expected to generate around 1 billion rupees annually, which will help in managing Karachi's substantial water consumption of about 550 million gallons per day. The Mayor of Karachi has drawn attention to the issue of water tankers, with 5,500 of them distributing water across the city. To address water theft, 3,200 tankers have already been registered, and efforts are ongoing to register the remaining 2,300.

For many residents, this change may be significant as water has traditionally been freely available. With the introduction of digital meters to monitor water usage, the importance of water conservation is being emphasized.
