Minister Ahsan Iqbal stresses enhancing seaports and shipping services to boost Pakistan's exports and achieve sustainable economic growth.

In recent discussions surrounding Pakistan's economic growth, the focus has shifted towards enhancing exports as a vital component for sustainable development. Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal has underscored the importance of improving the country’s seaports and shipping services to achieve this goal. During a meeting of the prime minister’s committee on logistic issues, which took place in Islamabad, Iqbal highlighted the pressing need for a strategic approach to bolster the efficiency of seaports, particularly in Karachi.

The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including the secretary of Maritime Affairs, the secretary of Railways, and members of the Planning Commission. This collaborative effort aims to address the logistical challenges currently faced by seaports, which are crucial for facilitating trade and increasing exports. Iqbal directed the Ministry of Maritime Affairs to formulate an action plan that focuses on enhancing the efficiency of seaports and expediting clearance services, which are essential for smooth operations.

According to the minister, achieving a sustained economic growth rate of eight percent is imperative for strengthening the national economy. He emphasized that increasing Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and boosting productivity across all sectors should be prioritized. The minister also pointed out that efficient logistic services play a significant role in enhancing exports, stating, "The government is taking measures to make the seaports more efficient and competitive, with fast container delivery services in collaboration with the private sector."

Moreover, Iqbal stressed the necessity for Pakistani goods to be transported using Pakistani ships, positioning exports as the centerpiece of the economy. He noted that countries that have successfully achieved export-led growth have done so by ensuring a smooth supply chain, characterized by efficient, competitive, and rapid clearance services at their seaports.

In light of the current economic landscape, the minister highlighted the importance of seizing the opportunity presented by a three-year "insurance policy" from the recent International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme. This support could provide the necessary stability for Pakistan to enhance its export capabilities and improve its overall economic standing.

The call for increased exports through improved seaport and shipping services is not just a matter of economic strategy; it is a crucial step towards ensuring a prosperous future for Pakistan. By prioritizing these enhancements, the government can pave the way for a more robust economy, ultimately benefiting all citizens. As the nation moves forward, it is essential to recognize that a strong export sector is fundamental to achieving long-term economic stability and growth.
