In 2023, the bilateral trade between Saudi Arabia and Malaysia reached an impressive $11.07 billion, marking a significant increase of 8.5 percent compared to the previous year. This development underscores the strong economic ties that have been cultivated between the two nations over the years. Datuk Wan Zaidi Wan Abdullah, the Malaysian ambassador to Saudi Arabia, made this announcement during a reception held at Riyadh’s Cultural Palace, where he celebrated Malaysia's National Day, Malaysia Day, and the 91st Malaysian Armed Forces Day.
Abdullah emphasized the historical relationship between Saudi Arabia and Malaysia, noting that the Kingdom stands as Malaysia's largest trading partner among West Asian countries. He pointed out that as of the first quarter of 2024, several projects involving Saudi investments in Malaysia have been approved, amounting to a total of $1.65 billion. This reflects a growing interest from Saudi Arabia in diversifying its investments and enhancing economic collaboration with Malaysia.
The ambassador also highlighted the establishment of a business council during the recent visit of Saudi Minister of Commerce Majed Al-Qasabi to Malaysia. This initiative is expected to pave the way for more extensive trade and investment opportunities, particularly in sectors that align with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, a strategic framework aimed at reducing the Kingdom's dependence on oil and diversifying its economy.
During the celebration, Abdullah expressed that the event was not just a celebration of Malaysia's National Day but also a recognition of the strong ties between Malaysia and Saudi Arabia. He stated, "That’s why we invite diverse people, not only Malaysians, but also our Malaysian friends in Saudi Arabia and businesses." This sentiment reflects the inclusive approach both nations are taking towards fostering a collaborative environment.
The theme of the celebration, “Malaysia MADANI: Jiwa Merdeka,” was explained by the ambassador as a representation of Malaysia’s commitment to prosperity and progress, grounded in core values such as sustainability, care, compassion, respect, innovation, prosperity, and trust. These values are essential as Malaysia continues to evolve from an agriculture-based economy to a more dynamic and diversified one.
Abdullah also took the opportunity to reaffirm Malaysia's unwavering support for the Palestinian cause, stating, "Malaysia remains unwavering in its support of the Palestinians and their cause to achieve freedom from the illegal Israeli occupation." This statement highlights Malaysia's commitment to international issues and its role in advocating for justice.
Furthermore, the ambassador noted the numerous high-level visits that have taken place between the two countries, particularly referencing Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s visits to Saudi Arabia. He remarked, "This not only solidifies the longstanding close relations between Malaysia and Saudi Arabia but further strengthens the personal bond between the two leaders." Such interactions are crucial for maintaining and enhancing diplomatic relations.
As the evening progressed, the celebration featured a traditional Malaysian martial arts demonstration, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Malaysia. Among the attendees was Faisal Al-Sudairi, the Undersecretary of Riyadh Region, highlighting the importance of this event in fostering diplomatic and cultural ties.
The growing bilateral trade between Saudi Arabia and Malaysia is a testament to the strong economic and cultural connections that both nations share. As they continue to collaborate on various fronts, including trade, investment, and cultural exchange, the future looks promising for both countries. This partnership not only benefits their economies but also enhances their roles on the global stage, paving the way for a more interconnected world.
