Turkmenistan and Pakistan discuss enhancing bilateral trade and cooperation in key sectors during a recent meeting.
In recent discussions aimed at strengthening economic ties, the Ambassador of Turkmenistan, Atadjan Movlamov, met with Pakistan's Federal Commerce Minister, Jam Kamal Khan. This meeting, which took place in Islamabad, was focused on enhancing bilateral trade and exploring new opportunities for cooperation between the two countries. Despite the long-standing friendship between Turkmenistan and Pakistan, trade volumes have remained disappointingly low, prompting the need for urgent action to boost economic interactions.
During the meeting, Minister Jam Kamal highlighted the vast potential that exists in various sectors such as energy, fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and construction materials. He stressed the importance of fostering robust business-to-business (B2B) relationships to increase trade volumes. The conversation also revolved around the Turkmenistan-Pakistan Transit Trade Agreement, which is anticipated to significantly improve the flow of goods between the two nations. This agreement is expected to enhance cooperation in banking, customs, and trade transit operations, making it easier for businesses to operate across borders.
Moreover, Minister Jam Kamal pointed out the necessity of revisiting existing agreements, particularly the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2015 between the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) of Turkmenistan. This MoU aims to promote trade collaborations, organize joint exhibitions, and develop national markets, which are crucial for fostering a vibrant trade environment.
Another significant topic of discussion was the 2019 MoU for the establishment of the Joint Business Council. This council is vital for facilitating direct business contacts between the two countries, allowing entrepreneurs to connect and explore new ventures. Additionally, the meeting addressed the need to improve direct cargo links, resolve challenges related to trade routes, and simplify procedures to make trade more efficient.
The discussions between Turkmenistan and Pakistan mark a pivotal step towards enhancing bilateral trade. By focusing on key agreements and exploring new sectors for collaboration, both nations can unlock their economic potential. As trade barriers are addressed and cooperation is strengthened, the future looks promising for both countries. It is essential for both governments to continue these dialogues and take concrete steps to ensure that the economic relationship flourishes, benefiting not only the nations involved but also their citizens.
