Ai-Da, the first robot artist, prepares for a historic auction at Sotheby’s with a portrait of Alan Turing, expected to fetch up to £150,000.

The world of art is witnessing a groundbreaking moment as Ai-Da, the first-ever robot artist powered by artificial intelligence, prepares to make history. This remarkable humanoid is set to have its painting auctioned at a major auction house, a feat that has never been accomplished before. The auction will take place at Sotheby’s in London next month, and the artwork is a striking portrait of the renowned English mathematician Alan Turing, who is often hailed as one of the fathers of modern computing.

Titled “AI god,” this impressive 2.2-meter (7.5-foot) high portrait is expected to attract bids ranging from 100,000 to 150,000 pounds, which is approximately $130,000 to $196,000. Sotheby’s has described the piece as a “haunting” representation, and the online sale will showcase various forms of digital art, highlighting the fascinating intersection between art and technology.

Ai-Da is not just any robot; it is designed to closely resemble a human female, complete with a face, large expressive eyes, and a brown wig. This ultra-realistic robot is among the most advanced in the world, utilizing AI algorithms to create its art. Equipped with cameras in its eyes and bionic hands, Ai-Da can produce artwork that is both intricate and thought-provoking.

The creation of Ai-Da was led by Aidan Meller, a gallery owner and founder of the Ai-Da Robot studio. He collaborated with artificial intelligence specialists from the universities of Oxford and Birmingham in England to bring this innovative project to life. Meller noted that Alan Turing, who gained fame as a World War II codebreaker and early computer scientist, had expressed concerns about the implications of AI back in the 1950s. This historical context adds depth to Ai-Da’s artwork, which features “muted tones and broken facial planes” that seem to reflect the struggles Turing warned about regarding the management of AI.

According to Meller, Ai-Da’s creations are “ethereal and haunting,” prompting viewers to ponder the future of AI and the global race to harness its power. In 2022, Ai-Da made headlines by painting portraits of famous acts at the Glastonbury Festival, including music icons like Billie Eilish, Diana Ross, Kendrick Lamar, and Paul McCartney.

The Sotheby’s Digital Art Sale is scheduled to run from October 31 to November 7, and it promises to be a significant event in the art world. As we stand on the brink of a new era where technology and creativity intertwine, Ai-Da’s auction not only marks a milestone for robot artists but also raises important questions about the role of AI in our lives. Will we embrace this new form of creativity, or will we tread carefully, mindful of the challenges that lie ahead? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: the future of art is evolving, and Ai-Da is leading the charge.
