DUBAI: In the vibrant culinary landscape of Saudi Arabia, Chef Meitha Yaseen stands out as a beacon of talent and inspiration. Hailing from AlUla, she embarked on her culinary journey in 2019 when she was selected as one of 24 aspiring chefs to participate in an intensive cooking course at Ferrandi Paris, one of France’s premier culinary schools. This opportunity was made possible through a scholarship organized by the Royal Commission of AlUla, which aims to foster local talent and promote the region's rich cultural heritage.
Reflecting on her experience, Yaseen expressed her gratitude, stating, “I was lucky enough to travel as part of a scholarship, which was organized by the Royal Commission of AlUla. I’m really grateful for the opportunity and all of the work that is being done to develop the local community because I was able to learn firsthand from some of the best chefs.” Living in Paris, she was surrounded by the city’s renowned cafés and bakeries, which fueled her passion for cooking. “It was truly a wonderful experience, not only because I learned so much, but also because it was my first time traveling solo,” she added.
After honing her skills in New York and the UK, Yaseen returned to AlUla, where she began her professional career at the Banyan Tree AlUla. Currently, she serves as the chef de partie at Joontos, a restaurant located within the exclusive eco-lodge, Dar Tantora The House Hotel, nestled in the heart of AlUla Old Town. Yaseen draws inspiration from her Bedouin heritage, stating, “My mother and her family are of Bedouin descent, born and raised in the surrounding desert. I’ve always been inspired by the women in our family, not just through their cooking but also their incredible work ethic, and I try to bring that with me to the kitchen every day.”
As a chef, Yaseen emphasizes the importance of travel in expanding one’s culinary horizons. She believes that exposure to different cuisines and techniques is invaluable. “Always remember to be curious about learning and trying new things — ideas, techniques, and recipes,” she advises aspiring chefs. This mindset not only enhances one’s cooking skills but also fosters creativity and innovation in the kitchen.
Chef Meitha Yaseen’s journey from AlUla to the culinary world is a testament to the power of passion, hard work, and the importance of community support. Her story serves as an inspiration for many young chefs in Saudi Arabia and beyond, encouraging them to pursue their dreams and embrace the rich tapestry of global cuisine. As she continues to create and innovate in her kitchen, Yaseen reminds us all that the journey of learning never truly ends.
