Craig Zobel shares his excitement for The Penguin series, highlighting its unique visual style and Colin Farrell's perspective on Gotham City.
After much anticipation, the new series The Penguin has finally premiered on Max, and it has mostly received rave reviews from audiences and critics alike. This series, which expands on the world introduced in Matt Reeves' film, has captured the attention of many, and its director, Craig Zobel, is excited to share his insights about the project.
Craig Zobel, who directed the first three episodes of The Penguin, expressed his enthusiasm for the project during an interview with Collider. He stated, "Initially, I saw Matt Reeves' film on opening day, and I was excited about it. I thought it was very clever." This initial excitement laid the groundwork for his involvement in the series. Zobel continued, "Later, when the show was up and running, and Lauren [LeFranc] had been brought in, and there were scripts and things, they approached me. Dylan Clark reached out, and I was like, 'Yeah, I already love this. This is great, and the world is cool. That's how I came to be a part of it.'"
Colin Farrell, who portrays Oz Cobb in the series, offers a different perspective on Gotham City compared to Bruce Wayne's viewpoint. Zobel elaborated on this contrast, noting, "The film has a lot of warm light in it, and that was definitely a thing that we noticed and talked about. Again, that was at least in the front side of the show, when you're still used to what the film was." This attention to detail highlights the creative choices made to differentiate the series from the film while still maintaining a connection to its roots.
Craig Zobel emphasized the importance of having a defined visual style for the series. He remarked, "I felt like it was important to be in that stuff. Also, it's just nice to have a contained palette, and have rules, for no other reason than that helps you just have fun by playing inside of the sandbox." This approach not only enhances the storytelling but also allows the audience to immerse themselves in the unique world of The Penguin. As viewers continue to explore this new chapter in Gotham's narrative, it is clear that the creative team is dedicated to delivering a captivating experience that resonates with fans of the franchise.
