A study reveals U.S. adults prioritize value and variety in fashion, emphasizing affordability and sustainability in their clothing choices.

Recent research highlights that U.S. adults are increasingly prioritizing price, quality, and variety when it comes to their clothing choices. A study conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of the global fashion retailer SHEIN surveyed over 2,000 adults across the United States. The findings reveal that a staggering 92% of respondents believe that purchasing clothing they desire enhances their overall well-being. Furthermore, 90% of those surveyed feel that even with limited financial resources, they should still have access to clothing that boosts their confidence.
Among the key insights from the research, an impressive 93% of Americans agree that clothing does not need to be expensive to provide long-lasting value. When asked about their priorities in selecting a clothing retailer, both price and quality emerged as the top considerations, each receiving 79% of the votes. Following closely behind was the importance of having a diverse range of styles and options, which garnered 58% support.
Interestingly, the study also found that when Americans discover unique clothing items, 68% tend to wear them more frequently. This figure rises to 76% among SHEIN shoppers, indicating a strong preference for distinctive fashion choices. Additionally, the research highlights a growing trend of mindful consumption, with 91% of Americans opting to donate, sell, swap, or alter clothing they no longer use, rather than simply discarding it.
George Chiao, the president of SHEIN U.S., emphasized the challenges of keeping up with fashion trends without incurring high costs. He stated, "Following the latest fashion trends has always come at a steep cost. Through SHEIN's on-demand business model, we've been able to overcome this challenge. By only producing the products customers want, we're able to reduce waste while offering a variety of products and keeping costs low." This approach not only caters to consumer demands but also promotes sustainability in the fashion industry.
