Harry Lawtey reveals Joaquin Phoenix's playful antics on set of 'Joker: Folie à Deux', exploring themes of mental health and identity.
The highly anticipated film "Joker: Folie à Deux" is set to hit theaters on October 4, 2024. This sequel to the critically acclaimed 2019 film "Joker" continues the story of Arthur Fleck, who is now institutionalized at Arkham Asylum, awaiting trial for his crimes as the infamous Joker. The film features a star-studded cast, including Joaquin Phoenix reprising his role as the Joker, alongside Lady Gaga, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, and Zazie Beetz.
In a recent interview, Harry Lawtey, who portrays Harvey Dent in the film, shared an amusing yet chilling experience he had while working with Joaquin Phoenix on set. Lawtey recounted a rehearsal where Phoenix, fully dressed in clown makeup, suggested a prank that involved FaceTiming Lawtey's mother. "He suggested, as a joke, that we FaceTime my mum and scare her," Lawtey explained. The prank took an unexpected turn when Lawtey’s mother, who was in England and preparing for bed, was startled by the sight of Phoenix leaning on Lawtey’s shoulder during the call. "My mum screamed, ran away and woke up my dad," he added, highlighting the playful yet intense atmosphere on set.
Lawtey, known for his role in HBO's "Industry," praised Phoenix's dedication to his craft, describing his performance as "a master class". He expressed admiration for Phoenix's ability to embody the character, stating, "To watch him do that laugh and to see the effect on him — on everyone — blew my mind." Lawtey noted that Phoenix would often cough after each take, a testament to the physical and emotional toll the role demands. "It was an education to watch him move through different flavors and shades of that performance," he remarked.
The film promises to delve deeper into the psyche of the Joker, exploring themes of mental health and societal rejection. With its unique blend of drama and dark humor, "Joker: Folie à Deux" is expected to captivate audiences just as its predecessor did, which garnered 11 Oscar nominations and won two, including Best Actor for Phoenix.
As the release date approaches, fans are eager to see how this sequel will expand on the complex character of Arthur Fleck and the chaotic world he inhabits. The combination of a talented cast and a compelling storyline suggests that "Joker: Folie à Deux" will not only entertain but also provoke thought and discussion about the nature of identity and madness in today’s society.
