Johnny Depp discusses his directing experience in 'Modi' at the San Sebastian Festival, set for release on December 5, 2024.

Johnny Depp, the renowned actor and filmmaker, recently made headlines at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain, where he was warmly welcomed by enthusiastic fans. The occasion marked the screening of his latest directorial venture, titled "Modi – Three Days On The Wing Of Madness." This film comes at a pivotal moment in Depp's career, following a tumultuous public legal battle with his ex-wife, Amber Heard, which had a significant impact on his professional life.

Depp expressed his feelings of being "humbled" when he received the offer to direct the film from the legendary actor Al Pacino and producer Barry Navidi. Recalling the moment, Depp shared, "I got a very strange phone call from Al Pacino who said 'Do you remember this Modigliani project?' and he said I should direct it." This unexpected opportunity reignited his passion for filmmaking, as he noted, "For some reason, Al saw me driving this strange machine. And when Pacino speaks, you listen, so I ran with it." However, he admitted that he initially had no clear vision of what the project would entail until everything fell into place.

"Modi" is not Depp's first experience in the director's chair. He previously directed the film "The Brave" in 1997. However, that experience left him feeling apprehensive about directing again. He candidly remarked, "When I was making The Brave 27 years ago, the last thing I wanted to do was attempt to make a film again. There was too much math. The mathematics was too much. You find yourself in this sort of structured hole." In contrast, directing "Modi" proved to be an "infinitely more positive experience" for him.

During the filming of "Modi," Depp described his creative process as feeling like a "giant toddler." He felt liberated, allowing his artistic talents to shine through. He stated, "I was very lucky. It was a singular experience for me. Very organic which does happen. This was a very organic grouping and things happened without having to go to anyone for anything." The film portrays three intense days in the life of the Italian artist Amadeo Modigliani, capturing the essence of his struggles and triumphs.

Fans of Johnny Depp can look forward to the release of "Modi – Three Days On The Wing Of Madness," which is set to hit theaters on December 5, 2024. This film not only marks a significant return for Depp as a director but also serves as a testament to his resilience in the face of adversity. As he embarks on this new chapter, it is clear that Depp's passion for storytelling remains undiminished, and audiences are eager to see how his journey unfolds on the big screen.
