Neva, the sequel to Gris, explores love and loss with stunning visuals and a magical fox companion, launching on October 15th.
In the world of indie gaming, few titles have captured the hearts of players quite like "Gris." This stunning game, which delves into the themes of grief and emotional healing, was developed by the talented team at Nomada Studio in Barcelona. Following its successful launch, the developers took a well-deserved break, stepping away from the pressures of game development for about six months. During this time, they avoided discussions about potential sequels or new projects, allowing their creativity to recharge.
However, inspiration struck director Conrad Roset, who had recently become a parent. He envisioned a new game that would not only echo the emotional depth of "Gris" but also introduce a new companion character. This idea led to the creation of "Neva," a game that promises to explore love and loss through the journey of a young woman and her magical fox companion. Lead producer Roger Mendoza humorously noted, "I told him, no problem, as long as it’s not a four-legged animal, you can do whatever you want," highlighting the challenges of animating creatures with multiple legs.
Set to launch on October 15th, "Neva" will be available on various platforms, including PC, Switch, Xbox, and PS5. Like its predecessor, it features breathtaking 2D animation and a captivating storyline. Players will step into the shoes of a young woman tasked with caring for a fox pup named Neva, navigating a world filled with dark forces reminiscent of the animated film "Spirited Away." The game is designed to be completed in about five hours, but it spans multiple seasons, allowing players to witness the growth of the fox from a helpless pup to a protective companion.
While "Neva" shares many similarities with "Gris," such as its short playtime, engaging gameplay, and stunning visuals, it also introduces new elements, including combat mechanics. Mendoza explained that the addition of a companion character inspired the combat system, stating, "[The addition of Neva] was in a way where the combat came from — we thought it would be a good mechanic to bring together the fact that there’s a companion now." This dynamic shifts as the fox matures, with the young woman initially protecting the fox, only to find that the roles reverse as the story progresses.
Despite the excitement surrounding these new features, the developers faced challenges in maintaining the accessibility that made "Gris" so popular. Mendoza acknowledged that adding combat and a companion made "Neva" less approachable than its predecessor. To address this, the team designed a story mode where players cannot die in battle, ensuring that the game remains enjoyable for all players, regardless of their skill level.
As "Neva" approaches its release date, anticipation continues to build among fans of indie games. The combination of emotional storytelling, beautiful animation, and innovative gameplay mechanics promises to deliver a unique experience that resonates with players. Whether you are a fan of "Gris" or new to the world of indie gaming, "Neva" is set to be a heartfelt journey that explores the complexities of love and loss, making it a title to watch out for.
