Pharrell Williams to headline the Web Summit in Lisbon, focusing on technology, AI, and political impacts on the industry.
PARIS: The Web Summit, one of Europe’s largest technology events, is set to commence on Monday in Lisbon, with renowned singer Pharrell Williams slated to kick off the proceedings. This year’s event is particularly significant as it follows a tumultuous 2023 edition, during which several major companies withdrew their participation. The summit is expected to attract around 70,000 attendees, including over 3,000 startups and 1,000 investors, according to the event organizers.
Last year, the Web Summit faced backlash when its chief executive, Paddy Cosgrave, made controversial social media posts accusing Israel of war crimes in Gaza. This led to the withdrawal of prominent firms such as Google and Meta, forcing Cosgrave to apologize and step down from his position. However, he has since returned to lead the organization, which also hosts events globally.
Ricardo Lima, the head of startups at Web Summit, emphasized that the cancellations were primarily related to larger tech companies. He stated, "Those cancellations revolved more around big tech," highlighting a renewed focus on smaller firms and innovation this year. Lima expressed optimism about the participation of big tech firms in 2024, noting, "It’s safe to say the impacts were felt in 2023 but in 2024 (big tech firms) were all part of the events and part of the discussion."
Among the notable figures attending this year is Microsoft President Brad Smith, who is expected to discuss the company’s future plans for artificial intelligence. Microsoft has invested billions to integrate AI technology into its products, and discussions at the summit will cover various topics, including "the impact of AI on the planet, art, and social interactions, as well as the government’s role in regulating technology and the responsibilities of tech giants."
The political landscape will also be a focal point at the summit, particularly with the re-election of Donald Trump as US president. Tech mogul Elon Musk is anticipated to play a significant role in Trump’s administration, prompting discussions on how this political shift may affect the tech industry. Lima remarked, "I think everyone is still digesting the news, I am also very curious to understand the impact."
The opening night promises to be exciting, featuring Pharrell Williams, who is currently promoting his role in the latest Lego movie, "Piece by Piece." The summit’s official X account announced that Williams will discuss "the intersection of culture and commerce," providing insights into how his innovative approach has led to success across various industries.
As the Web Summit unfolds, it will serve as a platform for dialogue on pressing issues in technology, culture, and politics. The convergence of diverse voices and ideas at this event highlights the importance of collaboration and innovation in shaping the future. Attendees and viewers alike can look forward to a rich exchange of knowledge that could influence the tech landscape for years to come.
