ISLAMABAD: The arrival of Premier Li Qiang, the Prime Minister of China, in Islamabad marks a significant moment in the diplomatic relations between Pakistan and China. This visit, which spans four days, is not only a chance for the two nations to strengthen their ties but also a historic occasion as it is the first visit by a Chinese premier to Pakistan in 11 years. The visit comes at a time when both countries are looking to enhance their cooperation in various sectors, particularly in economic and trade relations.
Upon his arrival, Premier Li was greeted with a grand red-carpet welcome. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, along with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, was present to receive him at the airport. The atmosphere was festive, with two children dressed in traditional Pakistani attire presenting bouquets to the Chinese dignitary, while a 21-gun salute celebrated his arrival. The streets of Islamabad were adorned with flags of both nations, symbolizing the deep-rooted friendship and cooperation that has flourished over the years.
During his visit, Premier Li is scheduled to meet with Pakistan’s civil and military leadership. A formal welcome ceremony will take place at the Prime Minister's House, where a guard of honour will be presented. The discussions between the two prime ministers will focus on various aspects of Pakistan-China relations, including the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which is a cornerstone of their partnership.
Both leaders are expected to sign several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation, particularly in the context of CPEC-II and other major projects. Additionally, Premier Li will virtually inaugurate the Gwadar International Airport, a significant development in the region that is expected to boost trade and connectivity.
Furthermore, Premier Li will engage with President Asif Ali Zardari and hold meetings with parliamentary leaders and senior military officials. His participation in the upcoming meeting of the Council of the Heads of Government of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on October 15-16 is also a key highlight of this visit. This meeting will see the attendance of various leaders from member states, including Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and India, among others.
As the host, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will preside over the SCO meeting, which aims to discuss ongoing cooperation in areas such as economy, trade, and socio-cultural linkages. This gathering presents an opportunity for Pakistan to showcase its commitment to regional stability and prosperity.
In preparation for the SCO summit, Islamabad Police have implemented a comprehensive security plan to ensure the safety of all dignitaries and participants. Over 9,000 police officers are on duty, and various agencies are collaborating to maintain a secure environment. The Inspector General of Police has assured that all necessary measures are in place to uphold the dignity of the country during this important event.
