Experts in Punjab emphasize accurate diagnosis and public awareness to combat the rising dengue epidemic.

In recent years, dengue fever has emerged as a significant public health concern in Pakistan, particularly in the province of Punjab. This mosquito-borne viral infection can lead to severe health complications and even fatalities if not diagnosed and treated promptly. As the number of dengue cases continues to rise, medical experts are emphasizing the need for accurate diagnosis, timely treatment, and ongoing care to combat this growing threat.

During a seminar titled 'Dengue preparedness and management,' organized by the Punjab Healthcare Commission (PHC), healthcare professionals gathered to discuss strategies for tackling the dengue epidemic. The event, chaired by PHC Chief Executive Officer Dr. Muhammad Saqib Aziz, brought together a diverse group of participants, including physicians, medical college principals, and representatives from health departments. This collaborative effort highlights the importance of a united front in addressing the challenges posed by dengue.

Dr. Saqib Aziz opened the seminar by stressing the critical role of quality treatment and public awareness in managing dengue. He called upon healthcare professionals and district administrations to actively participate in awareness campaigns and preventive measures. “Dengue is a complex challenge that requires a multifaceted approach,” he stated, expressing concern over the increasing number of cases in Punjab and the influence of climate change on the disease's spread.

One of the key messages from the seminar was the importance of accurate diagnosis and management. Prof. Muhammad Imran Hasan Khan, Chairperson of the Dengue Expert Advisory Group, emphasized that building the capacity of healthcare providers is essential in combating the dengue epidemic. He provided an update on the current situation in Punjab and outlined the steps being taken to address the issue. “Teamwork among healthcare providers is essential for successful treatment,” he remarked, highlighting the need for collaboration.

Prof. Tanvirus Salam, head of the Medicine Department at Allama Iqbal Medical College, also spoke about the significance of accurate diagnosis and management of dengue. He took the opportunity to dispel common misconceptions surrounding the disease and its treatment, providing clarity for healthcare professionals. “Prevention is key,” he asserted, urging the government to take an active role in eliminating dengue breeding sites by clearing stagnant water, organizing public awareness seminars, and reducing the costs of diagnostic tests.

The seminar served as a vital platform for healthcare service providers to enhance their preparedness in dealing with dengue. With millions affected globally each year, and countries like Brazil reporting 3.5 million cases, it is clear that dengue is not just a local issue but a worldwide concern. As the fight against dengue continues, it is crucial for all stakeholders to work together, share knowledge, and implement effective strategies to protect public health.

The battle against dengue requires a concerted effort from healthcare professionals, government bodies, and the community at large. By prioritizing accurate diagnosis, timely treatment, and preventive measures, we can significantly reduce the impact of this disease. Awareness is the first step towards prevention, and it is imperative that everyone plays their part in safeguarding health and well-being.
