Minister Kirmani and US CG discuss agricultural advancements in Punjab, focusing on modern techniques and financial support for farmers.
In recent discussions aimed at bolstering agricultural development in Punjab, Syed Ashiq Hussain Kirmani, the Minister for Agriculture & Livestock, met with US Consul General Kristin K Hawkins in Lahore. This meeting focused on several critical areas, including the adoption of modern farming techniques, the use of Genetically Modified (GMO) seeds, and measures to combat smog. The dialogue also touched upon the Pesticides and Fertilizer Act, which is essential for ensuring the safety and effectiveness of agricultural inputs.
The Minister expressed a strong interest in utilizing US expertise to improve crop productivity, particularly in the cultivation of cotton and soybeans. He acknowledged the significant role of US financial support through USAID, which has been instrumental in advancing various agricultural projects across Punjab. Under the guidance of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the provincial government is committed to comprehensive agricultural development, with numerous initiatives currently in progress.
One of the standout initiatives is the “Transforming Punjab Agriculture Programme,” a groundbreaking project valued at PKR 400 billion. This program has already provided interest-free loans amounting to PKR 150 billion to farmers through the Kisan Card this year. Such financial support is crucial for farmers, enabling them to invest in their crops and improve their livelihoods.
To tackle the persistent issue of smog, the government has introduced proactive measures, including the distribution of super seeders to farmers with a generous 60/40 subsidy. This initiative not only aids in reducing pollution but also enhances farming efficiency. Furthermore, plans are underway to launch a rental service for modern agricultural machinery, allowing farmers to access these essential tools at subsidized rates.
The Minister also announced plans to establish Agri Malls in every district of Punjab. These malls will serve as one-stop shops for farmers, providing access to quality seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides at discounted prices, along with machinery rental services. In a bid to further support farmers, the government is subsidizing the purchase of 9,500 tractors, offering a substantial PKR 1 million subsidy per tractor.
In addition to these initiatives, efforts are being made to transition farmers’ electric tube wells to solar energy. This shift aims to reduce production costs and enhance per-acre yields, making farming more sustainable and economically viable. The Minister also shared plans to establish a state-of-the-art laboratory in Lahore for testing fertilizer and pesticide samples, which will help maintain high agricultural standards in the province.
Secretary Agriculture Punjab, Iftikhar Ali Sahoo, reiterated that agriculture remains a top priority for the provincial government. He emphasized the importance of ongoing consultations with industry stakeholders regarding upcoming amendments to the Pesticides and Fertilizer Acts, which are set to be presented to the Punjab Assembly for approval soon.
This meeting between the Minister and the US Consul General marks a significant step towards enhancing agricultural practices in Punjab. By leveraging international expertise and implementing innovative solutions, Punjab aims to not only improve crop yields but also ensure a sustainable future for its farmers. As these initiatives unfold, they hold the promise of transforming the agricultural landscape of the province, ultimately benefiting the economy and the livelihoods of countless families.
