The Federal Board of Revenue blocks SIMs of over 500,000 non-filers for Tax Year 2023, emphasizing tax compliance in Pakistan.

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has taken a strict stance against non-filers of Income Tax Returns for the Tax Year 2023. In a recent development, the FBR has issued an Income Tax General Order (ITGO) to block mobile phone SIMs of 506,671 individuals who are not on the active taxpayer list but are required to file their tax returns.

Under the authority granted by section 114B of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, the FBR has directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and all telecom operators to immediately implement the ITGO. The FBR has set a deadline of May 15, 2024, for the telecom operators to submit a compliance report regarding the blocking of SIMs.

Individuals concerned about their tax status can easily check if their name is on the list by using the ctrl+F command and entering their CNIC number or full name.

The FBR's move to block mobile phone SIMs of non-filers underscores the importance of tax compliance in Pakistan. This initiative aims to encourage individuals to fulfill their tax obligations and contribute to the country's revenue generation efforts.
