Pakistan has been elected to the IAEA Board of Governors for 2024-2026, highlighting its commitment to peaceful nuclear energy and global cooperation.
Pakistan has recently achieved a significant milestone by being elected as a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) Board of Governors (BoG) for a two-year term from 2024 to 2026. This election took place during the 68th Session of the IAEA’s General Conference held in Vienna, where Pakistan was chosen by consensus from the Middle East and South Asia region. This marks Pakistan's 21st term on the IAEA’s BoG, highlighting the country’s ongoing commitment to the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
The IAEA plays a crucial role in promoting the safe and peaceful use of nuclear technology worldwide. Pakistan's election to the BoG is not just a recognition of its efforts but also an acknowledgment of its contributions to the IAEA's policies and programs. As a founding member of the IAEA, Pakistan has maintained a long-standing and mutually beneficial relationship with the agency, focusing on the peaceful applications of nuclear energy.
Pakistan has made significant strides in the field of nuclear energy, hosting the Anchor Centre for Cancer Care under the IAEA’s Rays of Hope initiative. Additionally, the country has established four Collaboration Centres that focus on various critical areas, including Food & Agriculture, Nuclear Safety & Security, Water Resource Management, and Innovative Nuclear Technology Applications. These initiatives demonstrate Pakistan's dedication to utilizing nuclear technology for the betterment of society.
Currently, Pakistan operates six nuclear power plants, generating a total of 3530 MW of clean energy. Furthermore, another nuclear power plant with a capacity of 1200 MW is under construction, showcasing the country’s commitment to expanding its clean energy resources. Pakistan is also eager to share its expertise in the peaceful use of nuclear technology with other IAEA member states through the agency’s Technical Cooperation Programme.
In addition to its recent election to the IAEA’s BoG, Pakistan was also elected as the President for the Tenth Review Meeting of the Convention on Nuclear Safety (CNS) earlier this month. This dual recognition underscores Pakistan's growing influence and responsibility in the global nuclear community.
Pakistan's election to the IAEA's Board of Governors is a testament to its dedication to the peaceful use of nuclear energy and its active role in international nuclear governance. As the world increasingly turns to nuclear technology for energy and medical applications, Pakistan's contributions and leadership in this field will be vital. The nation’s commitment to collaboration and sharing knowledge with other countries will not only enhance its standing in the international community but also promote global safety and security in nuclear energy use.
