Pakistan and China discuss future direction of CPEC Phase-2, emphasizing safety, project implementation, and mutual cooperation.
The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) has been a cornerstone of economic collaboration between Pakistan and China since its inception. This ambitious project aims to enhance connectivity and foster economic growth through infrastructure development, energy projects, and trade facilitation. Recently, significant discussions have taken place to outline the future direction of Phase-2 of CPEC, which is expected to bring even more benefits to both nations.
In a recent meeting held in Islamabad, the Federal Minister for Planning, Development & Special Initiatives, Ahsan Iqbal, along with the Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan, Jiang Zaidong, emphasized the importance of high-level workshops. These workshops, organized in coordination with the National Development and Reform Commission of China, aim to bring together experts from both countries to discuss and strategize the next steps for CPEC Phase-2.
During the meeting, Minister Iqbal condemned the recent attack on Chinese nationals in Karachi, stating, "This heinous act, clearly aimed at damaging Pakistan-China relations, will not be tolerated." He reassured the ambassador that the safety of Chinese citizens in Pakistan is a top priority, and the government is committed to ensuring their security. This commitment is crucial, especially in light of the strong ties that exist between the two nations.
Both leaders discussed the need for effective implementation of key projects, including the Karachi-Hyderabad section of Main Line-1 (ML-1) and the Karakoram Highway (Thakot-Raikot Section). They agreed on the importance of accelerating the timely execution of these projects, which are vital for enhancing connectivity and economic growth in the region.
Furthermore, the development of Gwadar Port and Free Zone was highlighted as a mutual commitment. Ambassador Jiang expressed gratitude for Pakistan's engagement and noted that during the upcoming visit of the Prime Minister of Pakistan to China in June 2024, both countries would continue to promote cooperation in various sectors, including politics, international affairs, and security.
Minister Iqbal also pointed out that the Ministry of Planning is actively coordinating with the National Development and Reform Commission of China to arrange workshops that will define the specific goals and scope of CPEC’s "five corridors." This initiative aims to align these goals with the "Eight Points Roadmap of BRI" and the "5Es Framework of Pakistan," ensuring that both nations work towards a common vision.
The ongoing discussions and initiatives surrounding CPEC Phase-2 signify a promising future for Pakistan and China. As both countries continue to strengthen their partnership, the focus on security, effective project implementation, and mutual cooperation will be essential in realizing the full potential of this monumental economic corridor. The commitment shown by both sides not only reflects their dedication to economic growth but also underscores the importance of their longstanding friendship, which is poised to reach new heights in the coming years.
