Pakistan suspends Quetta train services for four days following a deadly bombing that killed 26, with BLA claiming responsibility.

KARACHI: In a tragic turn of events, Pakistan Railways has announced the suspension of train services from Quetta, a city in southwestern Pakistan, to other regions of the country for four days. This decision comes in the wake of a devastating bombing at the Quetta Railway Station that resulted in the loss of more than two dozen lives. On Saturday morning, a suicide bomber detonated explosives in a crowded area of the station, leading to the deaths of at least 26 individuals and injuring 64 others, as reported by officials.

The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), a prominent separatist group in Balochistan, has claimed responsibility for this heinous attack. This incident marks the deadliest assault in the region since a series of coordinated attacks on August 25-26, which claimed the lives of over 50 people, including both civilians and security personnel.

In light of these security concerns, Aamir Ali Baloch, the chief executive officer of Pakistan Railways, confirmed the suspension of train operations. He emphasized that the safety of passengers is the top priority. “Operations will resume as soon as clearance is granted,” stated Pakistan Railways in an official announcement on Sunday night.

It is worth noting that train services from Quetta had already been suspended for over a month following an earlier incident where separatist militants destroyed a crucial bridge in Balochistan on August 26. This bridge, built in 1887, was a significant link established by the British Army to connect Quetta with Chaman, near the Afghan border.

Despite these challenges, Baloch expressed confidence in the resilience of Pakistan Railways, stating that they had successfully restored Quetta’s connectivity with the rest of the country. He assured that compensation would be provided to the families of the deceased and those injured, in accordance with the railways' insurance policy. “Fifty injured individuals are currently being treated in trauma centers, where Pakistan Railways’ medical teams are present to provide care,” he added, praising the Quetta division team for their prompt relief efforts.

Balochistan, known as Pakistan’s most impoverished province, has been a hotspot for separatist movements. Militants in the region argue that the federal government is unfairly exploiting the province’s rich mineral and gas resources. The area is also home to significant investment projects led by China, including a strategic port and a gold and copper mine.

The Pakistani government and military have consistently denied allegations of exploitation, asserting that neighboring countries such as India, Afghanistan, and Iran are responsible for instigating unrest in Balochistan to hinder its development.

This recent tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by Pakistan, particularly in regions like Balochistan. As the nation grapples with security issues and the quest for stability, it is crucial for the government to address the underlying grievances of the local population. Only through dialogue and development can lasting peace be achieved in this troubled province.
