President Zardari highlights Pakistan's commitment to a modern, sustainable transportation system during the Global Sustainable Transport Forum.
In recent years, the importance of a modern transportation system has become increasingly evident, especially in developing countries like Pakistan. A well-structured transportation network not only facilitates trade and travel but also plays a crucial role in economic growth and social development. Recognizing this, President Asif Ali Zardari has emphasized Pakistan's commitment to creating a safe, sustainable, and efficient transportation system that is also friendly to the environment.
During his virtual address at the Global Sustainable Transport Forum-2024, held in Beijing from September 25-26, 2024, President Zardari highlighted the collaborative efforts between Pakistan and China to achieve sustainable development goals. He stated, "The world needs resilient infrastructure for efficient, environment-friendly, and low-carbon transport solutions to fulfill the needs of the people." This statement underscores the necessity for countries to work together in addressing global challenges, particularly in the transport sector.
One of the notable initiatives introduced by the Pakistani government is the launch of pink buses specifically designed for women. This initiative aims to provide a safe, comfortable, and accessible mode of public transportation, ensuring that women can travel without fear or discomfort. Furthermore, President Zardari pointed out that rural accessibility to all-weather roads in Pakistan has significantly improved, reaching an impressive 92%. This enhancement is vital as it not only promotes sustainable development but also ensures that essential services reach the rural population.
However, the journey towards a sustainable transportation system is not without its challenges. President Zardari acknowledged that Pakistan is grappling with the sustainable maintenance of its infrastructure, particularly in light of the adverse effects of climate change. Over the past five years, the country has faced devastating floods, heavy rainfall, and extreme weather conditions that have severely damaged transport infrastructure, including roads, rails, and bridges. These challenges have isolated millions of people, especially in rural areas, highlighting the urgent need for resilient transport solutions.
In his address, President Zardari expressed deep appreciation for China's role in promoting sustainable development and its contributions to regional and global economic prosperity. He stated, "Pakistan extends its support for the development of sustainable transport cooperation among the transport authorities of the member states." This sentiment reflects a growing recognition of the interconnectedness of nations in addressing common challenges.
The commitment to developing a modern transportation system in Pakistan is a step in the right direction. It not only aims to improve the quality of life for citizens but also positions the country as a proactive participant in the global effort towards sustainable development. As nations continue to face environmental challenges, the focus on resilient and efficient transport solutions will be crucial in ensuring a better future for all. By investing in sustainable transportation, Pakistan is not just paving the way for economic growth but also fostering a sense of community and accessibility for its people.
