Six police officials in Lahore booked for kidnapping a youth and demanding Rs20 million ransom, highlighting severe police misconduct.
In a shocking incident that has raised serious concerns about police conduct in Pakistan, six police officials from the Green Town police station in Lahore have been booked for allegedly kidnapping a young man and demanding a ransom of Rs20 million for his release. This case highlights the alarming misuse of power by law enforcement agencies, which are meant to protect citizens rather than exploit them.
The ordeal began when a young man named Adnan had a verbal altercation with an assistant sub-inspector at the Green Town police station. According to his mother, Nazeeran Bibi, this police official held a grudge against her son and, in collusion with other officers, fabricated a case against him. The situation escalated when Adnan was reportedly arrested from College Road, taken to the police station, and subjected to severe torture.
Nazeeran Bibi's account of the events is harrowing. She stated that when her two other sons went to the police station to inquire about Adnan, they were also taken into custody and beaten. The police then allegedly returned to her home, ransacked the property, and stole cash, a motorbike, a mobile phone, and even Adnan's CNIC. The situation turned even more dire when the police demanded a ransom for the release of her sons, threatening to kill them if the money was not paid.
In a desperate attempt to save her children, Nazeeran Bibi sold the family car at a loss and managed to pay Rs3.5 million to the corrupt officers through her nephew. However, even after receiving the money, the police continued to demand more, further demonstrating their blatant disregard for the law.
Following Nazeeran Bibi's complaint, the Lahore police chief, Bilal Siddique Kamyana, took notice of the situation and ordered an inquiry. The investigation confirmed the allegations against the police officials, leading to the registration of an FIR against them for various charges, including misuse of authority and kidnapping for ransom.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for police reform in Pakistan. It raises critical questions about accountability within law enforcement agencies and the protection of citizens' rights. As the public demands justice for Adnan and his family, it is essential for authorities to take decisive action against those who abuse their power. Only through transparency and accountability can trust be restored in the police force, ensuring that such egregious acts do not happen again.
