In a significant move aimed at enhancing road safety in the province, the Punjab cabinet has approved the establishment of the Punjab Roads Safety Authority (PRSA). This initiative marks a historic step in Pakistan, as it is the first of its kind in the region. The PRSA is set to implement various measures focused on improving road safety, ensuring vehicular safety, and establishing driving training schools. With the alarming statistic that approximately 10 percent of traffic accident victims in Punjab lose their lives daily, the need for such an authority has never been more pressing.

The PRSA will be responsible for standardizing roads across the province and will also set up vehicular testing laboratories to ensure that vehicles meet safety standards. Additionally, a motor transport agency will be created under the supervision of the PRSA, further solidifying the framework for road safety in Punjab.

During the cabinet meeting, the Chief Minister welcomed three new members to the cabinet and emphasized the importance of rehabilitating Gurdwaras and other minority religious sites throughout Punjab. The cabinet also approved an increase in the grant for Artists Khidmat Cards, which support actors in the province, and directed the formulation of a comprehensive plan for the welfare of the acting community.

In a bid to enhance the efficiency of the media sector, the cabinet approved the proposed Punjab Government Advertisement Policy for 2024 and instructed the establishment of a foolproof system to ensure timely payments of media dues. Furthermore, the cabinet addressed the pressing issues of sewerage systems in various cities, seeking actionable plans to resolve these challenges.

Recognizing outstanding performance, the Chief Minister awarded certificates of merit to five Deputy Commissioners for their exemplary work based on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). The Deputy Commissioner of Bahawalnagar topped the list, followed by officials from Murree, Mianwali, Layyah, and Pakpattan, all of whom received two months' honorary salary for their achievements.

Other significant approvals included conditional clearance for all Lahore Development Authority (LDA) cases within a year, the construction of protective embankments to combat river erosion, and the establishment of an eye center for treating eye cancer and other diseases in Punjab. The Chief Minister also highlighted the importance of agricultural development, announcing a mega project involving the purchase of Rs. 10 billion worth of agricultural items through the Kisan Card initiative.

In addition to these measures, the cabinet approved the inclusion of an International Standard Squash Facility Scheme in Lahore's annual development program and allocated Rs. 20 million in grant-in-aid for the Pakistan Blind Cricket Council in preparation for the T20 World Cup for the Blind. The cabinet also decided to increase rewards for the capture of dangerous criminals and allocated Rs. 210 million for the Chief Minister Punjab Climate Leadership Development Internship Program.

As part of its ongoing efforts to improve public services, the cabinet approved the reappointment of the Chief Executive Officer of Quaid-e-Azam Solar Power Limited and made amendments to various laws, including the Notaries Ordinance and the Punjab Police Rules. Funds were also allocated for enhancing sewerage and rainwater drainage systems across Punjab.

In a show of solidarity, the cabinet approved ex-gratia financial assistance for the families of those martyred in recent terrorist attacks in Balochistan. The installation of tough tiles and the establishment of a sewerage system in Bahawalpur were also approved, alongside the replacement of outdated security vehicles.

The establishment of the Punjab Roads Safety Authority is a crucial step towards ensuring safer roads and reducing traffic-related fatalities in the province. With a comprehensive approach that includes various initiatives aimed at improving public welfare, the Punjab government is demonstrating its commitment to fostering a safer and more efficient environment for its citizens. As these plans unfold, it is essential for the public to remain informed and engaged, as their participation will be vital in achieving the desired outcomes for road safety and community well-being.
