SNGPL pledges to maintain gas supply during winter meal times amid rising demand and ongoing shortages in Pakistan.
In Pakistan, the winter season brings with it a significant increase in gas demand, as households rely heavily on natural gas for cooking and heating. This year, Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) has made a commitment to ensure that gas supply remains available during meal times, despite the challenges posed by soaring demand. Managing Director Amer Tufail emphasized the importance of responsible gas usage, urging the public to reduce their consumption as the commodity has become increasingly expensive.
During a recent interview, Tufail highlighted the ongoing gas shortage that has plagued Pakistan for decades. He pointed out that the demand for gas can triple during the winter months, leading to a strain on the existing supply. To address this issue, he warned against the use of illegal compressor devices, which not only exacerbate the shortage but also pose safety risks, as they can lead to accidents.
Furthermore, Tufail confirmed that the restriction on new gas connections would remain in place, despite over three million requests pending for new connections. This decision reflects the ongoing struggle to balance supply and demand in a country where only 22% of households have access to piped gas. The majority of families rely on gas cylinders or alternative methods for cooking, which can be both inconvenient and costly.
Pakistan's gas reserves account for a mere 0.4% of global reserves, while the country consumes about 1.1% of the world's gas. The distribution of gas is primarily through pipelines, with households claiming 50% of the available supplies. Other sectors, such as fertiliser production, independent power plants, and the industrial and CNG sectors, also compete for this limited resource.
Since the 1950s, natural gas has been the preferred fuel for many households in Pakistan, especially in urban areas connected to the gas supply grid. However, the persistent gas load-shedding has become a pressing political and social issue, affecting the daily lives of millions. As the winter months approach, the challenge of ensuring a stable gas supply remains a top priority for SNGPL and the government.
While SNGPL's commitment to maintaining gas supply during meal times is a positive step, it is crucial for consumers to be mindful of their usage. The ongoing gas crisis highlights the need for sustainable energy solutions and a reevaluation of how resources are allocated. As Pakistan navigates these challenges, it is essential for both the government and the public to work together to find effective solutions that ensure a reliable energy supply for all.
