NIMA and ISSI seminar highlights strategic planning to address Pakistan's maritime trade challenges and enhance international cooperation.
In recent years, the maritime sector has emerged as a crucial component of global trade, and Pakistan is no exception. With its strategic location along vital shipping routes, the country has the potential to significantly enhance its maritime trade. However, various challenges, including regional connectivity, security concerns, and the impacts of climate change, pose significant hurdles. Recognizing the importance of addressing these issues, the National Institute of Maritime Affairs (NIMA) and the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) recently held a seminar focused on the theme of 'Challenges to Maritime Trade' as part of their Blue Economy series.
The seminar featured a range of discussions aimed at fostering long-term strategic planning to overcome maritime challenges and unlock the sector's potential. Vice Admiral (retired) Ahmed Saeed, President of NIMA, opened the event by welcoming participants and outlining the key themes of the seminar. His insights set the tone for a day filled with valuable discussions and presentations.
Captain Naeem Sarfraz, the Guest of Honour, emphasized the necessity of involving subject-matter experts in policymaking. He proposed the adoption of a cost-effective and environmentally friendly inland water transport system, which could serve as a sustainable alternative to traditional transport methods. This suggestion highlights the need for innovative solutions to enhance Pakistan's maritime capabilities.
Prominent scholars, including Dr. Anjum Sarfraz, Dr. Hassan Daud, and Dr. Maliha Zeba Khan, delivered presentations that laid the groundwork for an in-depth panel discussion. Experts such as Ambassador Nadeem Riyaz, Dr. Shabana Fayyaz, and Dr. Usman Chohan addressed the gaps in Pakistan's maritime policy and stressed the importance of enhancing maritime diplomacy. Their collective insights underscored the need for a cohesive approach to tackle the challenges facing the maritime sector.
One of the highlights of the seminar was the praise for the Pakistan Navy's expansion of the 'Exercise Aman' initiative. This initiative aims to integrate the global maritime industry into Pakistan's economy, showcasing the country's commitment to fostering international cooperation in maritime affairs. Chief Guest Vice Admiral Ahmad Tasnim (retired) further emphasized the need to shift Pakistan's economic focus from the northern regions to the southern coastlines. This shift is essential for fully harnessing the potential of maritime trade.
As the seminar concluded, Ambassador Sohail Mahmood, Director General of ISSI, reiterated the importance of long-term strategic planning in overcoming maritime challenges. The event successfully brought together scholars, diplomats, industry experts, and students, sparking dynamic discussions on the future of Pakistan's maritime trade.
The discussions held during this seminar highlight the critical need for a unified approach to address the challenges facing Pakistan's maritime sector. By fostering collaboration among experts and policymakers, Pakistan can unlock the vast potential of its maritime trade, ultimately contributing to the nation's economic growth and development. As the world continues to evolve, it is imperative for Pakistan to adapt and innovate in order to secure its place in the global maritime landscape.
