Thieves Target Ancient Shrines in Hazara Region

Thieves in the Hazara region have shifted their focus from the mountains to ancient shrines and graves in search of hidden treasures. Recently, a spate of thefts has occurred in the Ghazi region, where thieves have been plundering graves and shrines overnight, stealing valuable artefacts buried beneath the ground. One of the targeted sites was the old shrine of Shaheed Baba in Jalo village, situated along the Indus River.

The hilly terrain of Ghazi holds significant historical importance, boasting numerous shrines, dargahs, and hermitages dating back to pre-independence Pakistan. These sites draw devotees from across Pakistan and beyond. However, the remote locations of these shrines make them susceptible to theft, as the limited movement in the area provides cover for criminals.

In a recent incident, thieves boldly excavated historical shrines and graves in search of treasure, absconding with valuable artefacts and gold. This illicit activity has transformed into a profitable enterprise, with thieves specifically targeting precious antiquities buried by Hindus before Pakistan's formation, posing a challenge for the Department of Archaeology.

Multiple thefts of valuable antiques have been reported in Hazara, with thieves managing to evade capture despite the recurring crimes. Local residents are calling for the recovery of the stolen items and urging authorities to enforce strict measures to prevent future incidents of shrine and grave desecration in the region.

The theft of ancient artefacts from shrines and graves in the Hazara region is a concerning trend that threatens the historical heritage of the area.
