ATC Lahore issues non-bailable warrants for CM Gandapur amid serious charges, raising political accountability concerns ahead of PTI protests.

On November 19, 2024, a significant legal development unfolded in Lahore as an anti-terrorism court issued non-bailable arrest warrants for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur. This decision stems from a case registered against him at the Manawan Police Station, where he is accused of vandalizing vehicles during a public gathering in Lahore's Kahna area.

The timing of this court ruling is particularly noteworthy, as it comes just days before the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party's planned protests across the country on November 24. The party, led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan, has called upon its supporters to march towards Islamabad, presenting four key demands: the revocation of the 26th Constitutional Amendment, the restoration of democracy and the Constitution, the return of the public’s mandate, and the release of all "innocent political" prisoners.

Earlier, on September 24, the Lahore police had filed a fresh case against CM Gandapur under 13 different provisions, including the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA). This was in response to violent incidents that occurred near the Sialkot Interchange while he was en route to Lahore to attend a PTI rally. The situation escalated when the police intervened during the rally, which had exceeded the 6 PM deadline specified in the no-objection certificate (NOC). The police action led to the abrupt end of the rally, forcing PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and other leaders to leave the venue.

Despite the chaos, CM Gandapur managed to arrive at the rally site and briefly address his supporters. His convoy, which reportedly included rescue 1122 ambulances and heavy machinery, was intended to clear any obstacles on their route. However, videos surfaced on social media showing the Chief Minister breaking the window of a truck with his rifle, further complicating his legal troubles.

The first information report (FIR) filed at the Manawan Police Station charges Gandapur with serious offenses, including attempted murder. The FIR alleges that he led an armed mob at the Sialkot Interchange, which attempted to set vehicles on fire at the toll plaza on his orders. It also claims that the mob resisted police efforts with an AK-47, while CM Gandapur and others were actively involved in the riot. The violence resulted in injuries to two policemen, highlighting the severity of the situation.

This unfolding saga raises critical questions about political accountability and the rule of law in Pakistan. As the PTI prepares for its nationwide protests, the implications of CM Gandapur's legal challenges could resonate throughout the political landscape. The situation serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between political expression and lawful conduct, urging all parties involved to reflect on the importance of maintaining peace and order in a democratic society.
