LHCBA condemns violence against PTI workers in Islamabad, demanding accountability from the government and highlighting concerns over democracy.
In recent days, Pakistan has witnessed a surge in political tensions, particularly surrounding the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. The Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) has taken a strong stance against the violence directed at PTI workers during a protest in Islamabad. This incident has raised serious concerns about the state of democracy and the treatment of citizens exercising their rights.
During a general house meeting held on Thursday, Bar President Asad Butt expressed his outrage over the government's actions, labeling them as 'shameful.' He emphasized that the rulers must be held accountable for their decision to open fire on their own citizens, a move that many view as a blatant violation of human rights. Butt did not hold back in his criticism, calling the Prime Minister 'incompetent' and demanding his resignation. Furthermore, he insisted that the interior minister should also be held responsible for the violence, demanding his resignation as well.
Adding to the chorus of condemnation, the Secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association, Salman Mansoor, pointed out that no ruling political party currently holds a legitimate mandate from the people. He highlighted that the protesters in Islamabad were merely exercising their fundamental right to engage in political protest, a cornerstone of any democratic society.
Former LHCBA President Ahmed Awais echoed these sentiments, stating that while the Constitution exists in Pakistan, it is being systematically disregarded by those in power. He lamented the dismantling of democracy in the country, a situation that many citizens find deeply troubling. Rabia Bajwa, a former vice president of the LHCBA, remarked that the world has witnessed the 'fascism' directed at political workers, expressing her regret that the sacrifices made by these individuals have been overlooked.
The events in Islamabad serve as a stark reminder of the fragility of democratic institutions in Pakistan. As citizens, it is crucial to remain vigilant and advocate for the protection of fundamental rights. The voices of the people must be heard, and the government must be held accountable for its actions. In a democracy, every citizen has the right to protest peacefully, and it is the responsibility of the state to ensure their safety and uphold their rights. The ongoing situation calls for reflection on the values of democracy and the importance of protecting those who dare to speak out.
