Omar Abdullah completes the first Kashmir Half Marathon, celebrating local culture and promoting Kashmir as a peaceful international event destination.
On October 20, 2023, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah participated in a remarkable half marathon during a significant international event held in Kashmir. This event marked a milestone as it was the first time Kashmir hosted such a large-scale marathon, attracting around 2,000 athletes, including 59 international participants. The marathon took place in the picturesque city of Srinagar, starting from Polo View Street, where Abdullah flagged off the event alongside Bollywood star Suniel Shetty.
Omar Abdullah, who completed the challenging 21-kilometer course, expressed his excitement and pride in his achievement. He stated, "I have never run more than 13 Km all my life. Today, I completed the half marathon and I am happy about it." His enthusiasm was palpable as he congratulated all the athletes and the people of Srinagar who came out to support the event.
In a post on X, Abdullah shared his joy, saying, "I'm so damn pleased with myself today. I completed the Kashmir Half Marathon - 21 KM at an average pace of 5 min 54 sec per KM." He humorously noted that he had no formal training or nutrition plan, simply enjoying a banana and a couple of dates during the run. The highlight for him was running past his home, where his family and friends cheered him on.
The marathon featured both a full 42-kilometer race and the half marathon, showcasing the athletic talent from various regions. Raja Yaqoob Farooq, the director of tourism for Kashmir, highlighted the significance of this event, stating that it sends a powerful message to the world about the peace and beauty of Kashmir. He mentioned, "This marathon will send a message across the globe that Kashmir is peaceful. All these athletes will send a message across the world that Kashmir is fit to host international events."
Participants not only engaged in the marathon but also had the opportunity to experience the rich culture of Kashmir. They were treated to local cuisine and had the chance to visit the famous Gulmarg ski resort, enjoying the breathtaking views and the autumn season, which is often referred to as the king of seasons in Kashmir.
This event follows other international gatherings in the region, such as the G20 meeting and a sports car racing event, which have contributed to a growing perception of Kashmir as a safe and welcoming destination for tourists. The successful execution of the marathon is expected to further enhance this image, attracting more visitors to the beautiful valley.
The Kashmir Half Marathon not only showcased the athletic prowess of its participants but also served as a testament to the region's potential for hosting international events. As athletes and tourists alike experience the stunning landscapes and warm hospitality of Kashmir, it becomes clear that the valley is ready to embrace a brighter, more peaceful future.
