In a significant development for the England cricket team, captain Ben Stokes has confirmed that he will not participate in the opening Test match against Pakistan in Multan. This decision comes as Stokes continues to recover from a hamstring injury that has kept him off the field. The match is set to begin on Monday, and Stokes, who is 33 years old, expressed his disappointment at missing this crucial game.

Stokes stated, "I tried my hardest to get myself fit for this game, but have taken the call to miss this one because I’ve not quite managed to get game-ready." His commitment to recovery is evident as he mentioned the extensive rehabilitation program he is undergoing. He added, "There is a lot that has to go into my rehab programme. We got to a certain point, but looking at the picture of what we've got coming up and physically where I'm at, I'm not quite ready to play." This highlights the importance of ensuring he is fully fit before returning to competitive cricket.

In Stokes' absence, batter Ollie Pope will take on the captaincy role. Pope previously led the team during the home series against Sri Lanka and is expected to guide the squad effectively. Stokes trained alone before batting in the nets on Saturday, ultimately deciding to rule himself out of the first of the three Tests against Pakistan. He remains hopeful about his chances for the second Test, which is also in Multan, starting on October 15. Stokes remarked, "I've pushed myself incredibly hard and worked really hard with the medical team to get to where I'm at now. I think I'm further ahead than what we expected. I'll be working just as hard over the next 10 days to try to get myself fit for the second test." This determination showcases his dedication to the team and the sport.

England has announced their playing XI for the match, which includes Brydon Carse, a Durham seamer who will be making his Test debut. Additionally, left-arm spinner Jack Leach returns to the Test setup for the first time since the India tour in January. Opener Zak Crawley is also back after recovering from a broken finger sustained during the summer. England enters this series with confidence, having recently secured a 2-1 victory against Sri Lanka at home.

However, England batter Joe Root has emphasized the need for caution, stating, "We know how good Pakistan is as a team and the ability and skill level they have. You got to have full respect for that." He acknowledged the challenges posed by Pakistan, especially in their home conditions, where they have several players capable of turning the game around. This respect for the opposition is crucial in maintaining focus and ensuring a competitive spirit throughout the series.

As the cricketing world turns its attention to this exciting series, fans will be eager to see how England performs without their captain. The absence of Stokes is undoubtedly a blow, but it also presents an opportunity for other players to step up and showcase their talents. With the backdrop of a recent 2-0 whitewash by Bangladesh, Pakistan will be looking to bounce back and prove their mettle against a formidable England side. This series promises to be a thrilling contest, filled with drama and skill, as both teams vie for supremacy on the cricket field.
