ISLAMABAD: The excitement surrounding junior tennis in Pakistan has reached new heights as local talents Muhammad Talha Khan and Nadir Mirza have successfully advanced to the quarterfinals of the prestigious ITF Pakistan J30 Ali Embroidery Mills World Junior Tennis Championships 2024. This significant event is currently taking place at the Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) Tennis Complex in Islamabad, showcasing the skills of young athletes from around the globe.
In the boys’ singles pre-quarterfinals, Muhammad Talha Khan displayed exceptional skill and determination, overpowering Thailand’s Patham Laosakulporn with a convincing score of 6-1, 6-4. Meanwhile, Nadir Mirza also shone brightly, defeating his compatriot Ahmad Nael Qureshi with a score of 6-2, 6-4. These victories not only highlight the talent present in Pakistan but also the growing competitiveness of its junior players.
However, the tournament has not been without its challenges for some of Pakistan’s top seeds. Bilal Asim faced a tough match against South Korea’s Park Dohyun, ultimately losing 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Similarly, Ahtesham Humayun was bested by Seung Woo Han from Korea with a score of 6-3, 6-3. In another match, Sign Ji from Korea defeated Thailand’s Danathi Taking 6-3, 6-0, showcasing the high level of international competition.
The boys’ doubles first round also saw some thrilling matches. The duo of Asim Bilal and Qureshi Ahmad Nael triumphed over Dohyun Park and Mazari Amir Muhammad Khan with a close score of 7-5, 7-5. In another match, Ji Sion and Jung Yeonmu defeated Khan Muhammad Huzaifa and Khan Muhammad Talha 7-5, 6-4, further emphasizing the competitive spirit of the tournament.
In the girls’ doubles first round, Japanese players Katsube Haruhi and Hinata Wada dominated the court, defeating Fatima Ali Raja and Zainab Ali Raja with a score of 6-0, 6-0. Additionally, the Korean pair of Jo A Hyun and Lee Chaerin overcame Hong Jin A and Yan Jingke with a score of 6-1, 6-2, demonstrating the strength of international competitors.
Rashid Malik, a prominent figure in Pakistani tennis, shared his insights on the tournament, stating, “The standard of our junior players has improved significantly, and I have urged the PTF to focus on junior development.” He expressed gratitude towards Tariq Zaman, CEO of Ali Embroidery Mills, for his generous support in promoting tennis across the nation. Malik also mentioned that the Punjab Lawn Tennis Association (PLTA) has ambitious plans for 2025, aiming to collaborate closely with the PTF to nurture young talent and secure a bright future for tennis in Pakistan.
The tournament features 47 junior players from various countries, including Hong Kong, Japan, China, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Canada, Korea, Germany, Ireland, Kazakhstan, Maldives, and Singapore. Pakistan is proudly represented by 28 players, comprising 22 boys and 6 girls, making this event a true showcase of global junior tennis talent.
