The European Union's Digital Markets Act triggers changes in Apple's ecosystem, affecting app developers and signaling potential market shifts with the upcoming iPhone 16 Series.
The European Union's Digital Markets Act, aimed at promoting fair competition, has led to significant changes within Apple's ecosystem. Following the designation of iPadOS as a gatekeeper platform, Apple has announced that the alterations made for iPhones will also apply to iPads starting this fall. These changes, mandated by the European Commission, include the introduction of alternative app marketplaces, the freedom to choose a different browser, select a preferred default search engine, and diversify contactless payment methods.
Developers will now have to pay a Core Technology Fee for app downloads exceeding one million installs, with installations on both iPhones and iPads counting as a single install. While some developers may opt to remain exclusive to the App Store, this shift towards embracing the iPad could potentially reshape the digital market landscape.
Meanwhile, Apple is gearing up for its iPhone 16 Series, with leaks suggesting a focus on larger Pro models, enhanced AI capabilities, and possible design updates. These developments signal a significant evolution in Apple's product offerings and market strategies.
