Google partners with NV Energy for geothermal electricity supply

Google has recently announced a groundbreaking partnership with Berkshire Hathaway electric utility NV Energy to supply its Nevada data centers with advanced geothermal electricity. This initiative, subject to approval from state utility regulators, aims to significantly boost the amount of carbon-free geothermal electricity powering Google's operations in Nevada over the next six years.

In response to the escalating demand for electricity from major technology companies to sustain their expanding data centers, crucial for technologies like artificial intelligence and cloud computing, Google is committed to transitioning to entirely clean energy sources by 2030. The company plans to invest billions in new data centers across various states this year.

Presently, Google's global operations are fueled by 64% carbon-free energy, including wind and solar power. The collaboration with NV Energy showcases a strategic approach for companies with substantial electricity requirements and environmental objectives to access clean energy in regulated power markets.

This partnership involves Google actively participating in NV Energy's power generation planning and introducing a unique rate structure called the Clean Transition Tariff. Similarly, Duke Energy, operating in regulated states, has also forged similar agreements with Google, Microsoft, and Amazon.

To facilitate this collaboration, NV Energy has inked a power purchase agreement with advanced geothermal developer Fervo Energy. Geothermal energy, which taps into underground heat for electricity production, emerges as a reliable and sustainable alternative to solar and wind power, particularly in regions like Nevada where it contributes significantly to electricity generation.

This partnership marks a significant stride towards Google's clean energy objectives and establishes a precedent for other companies seeking to secure clean energy sources in regulated markets.
