In recent years, the world has witnessed a significant shift towards the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in various sectors, particularly in transportation. One of the most exciting developments in this field is the emergence of AI-driven driver-assist systems, which aim to enhance road safety and improve the driving experience. A notable figure in this revolution is Nasser Mansour Al-Khaldi, a Saudi software developer and automotive expert, who has dedicated his efforts to creating a self-driving system that can be installed in regular cars.

Hailing from Taif province, Al-Khaldi's journey into the world of technology began at a young age. His early fascination with customizing video games, including hacking his Xbox 360, laid the groundwork for his future endeavors. Since 2015, he has focused on autonomous driving technology, culminating in the launch of the first autopilot system in Saudi Arabia in 2023. This innovative system, developed in collaboration with the California-based startup Comma.ai, is designed to be user-friendly and adaptable, allowing motorists to enhance their vehicles with advanced driver-assist features.

Al-Khaldi's system is built on open-source software that enables cars to drive themselves on highways, maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles and following them without human intervention. "It took me around five years to develop a device that records vehicle data in order to analyze it and add more advanced safety and smart driving systems to existing vehicles on the market," Al-Khaldi explained. His version of the technology has been tailored to meet local needs, expanding compatibility to over 64 car models that were not supported by the original system.

One of the standout features of Al-Khaldi's driver-assist system is its ability to function effectively at low speeds, which is particularly beneficial in the stop-and-go traffic common in the Gulf region. The system utilizes AI and remote sensing technology to continuously analyze the vehicle's surroundings, ensuring a safe driving experience. Al-Khaldi noted, "The system relies on high-resolution cameras and radar sensors to detect lanes, track nearby vehicles, and analyze data in real time. This analysis helps prevent collisions and ensures the vehicle stays in its lane."

Since its introduction to the Saudi market, approximately 500 units of the device have been sold, with exports reaching the US, Europe, Africa, and other parts of the Arab world. Al-Khaldi shared a remarkable story about a customer in the US who experienced a medical emergency while driving. Thanks to the driver-assist system, the car autonomously navigated for two hours until the driver regained consciousness. This incident led to an enhanced safety update, which prompts the driver to touch the steering wheel if their eyes remain unresponsive, adding an extra layer of safety during medical emergencies.

As the technology continues to evolve, Al-Khaldi and his team are exploring ways to make the system more accessible to a wider range of drivers. "I think we’ll find better ways of doing it that will be simpler and allow more users access to the technology," he stated. His vision for the future is ambitious, as he believes that AI will play a crucial role in the development of self-driving cars across Saudi Arabia. "Saudi Arabia has an ambitious vision that embraces artificial intelligence technologies. Self-driving has become one of the most important AI tools," he added.

Nasser Mansour Al-Khaldi's innovative work in developing an AI driver-assist system represents a significant step forward in enhancing road safety and transforming the driving experience. As technology continues to advance, it is essential for both developers and users to prioritize safety and accessibility, ensuring that these advancements benefit everyone on the road. The future of transportation in Saudi Arabia looks promising, with AI paving the way for safer and more efficient travel.
