UN Chief Warns Social Media and AI Amplify Human Impulses

In today’s digital age, social media and artificial intelligence (AI) have become integral parts of our daily lives. Recently, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres highlighted the darker side of these platforms, stating that they amplify the "worst human impulses." During a high-level meeting of the United Nations’ Alliance of Civilisations (UNAOC) in Cascais, Portugal, Guterres expressed his concerns about the unchecked power of social media and AI. He emphasized that these tools have allowed hate speech to spread rapidly, igniting violence and division among communities. "We must rein in hate speech and disinformation spreading online," he urged, underscoring the urgent need for action.

Guterres pointed out that the speed and reach of hate speech have reached unprecedented levels due to digital platforms. He stated, "The worst impulses of humanity are given a megaphone, and many times they lead to violence." This statement serves as a stark reminder of the responsibility that comes with the power of communication in the digital realm.

One of the most concerning aspects of this issue is the rise of deepfakes, which can make the "impossible and the unverified" appear credible in an instant. This technology can easily mislead individuals and communities, contributing to the spread of misinformation. Guterres noted that such false narratives are fueling dangerous ideologies, including anti-Semitism, anti-Muslim bigotry, and attacks on minority Christian communities.

As social media and AI continue to evolve, they provide a "new medium" for age-old tactics of division and hatred. Guterres reiterated his calls for peace in conflict-ridden areas such as Gaza, Lebanon, Ukraine, and Sudan, emphasizing the need for unity and understanding among diverse cultures and religions.

The UNAOC, established in 2005, aims to promote "cultural diversity, religious pluralism, and mutual respect." This year’s global forum, which runs from November 25 to 27, brings together leaders from various sectors, including presidents, ministers, and heads of international organizations, to discuss these pressing issues.
