Azerbaijan Railways highlights Middle Corridor trade opportunities at the European Silk Road Summit, launching its first export train to China.
The Middle Corridor, a vital trade route connecting Asia and Europe, has been gaining significant attention in recent years. This corridor, which runs through Azerbaijan, Türkiye, and Georgia, is becoming increasingly important for transporting goods between these regions. Recently, Azerbaijan Railways (ADY) CJSC took the opportunity to inform European logistics companies about the exciting prospects that the Middle Corridor offers. This briefing took place at the European Silk Road Summit held in Vienna, where ADY's Chairman's Advisor, Emil Mammadov, highlighted Azerbaijan's crucial role in enhancing regional and international cooperation.
Mammadov emphasized that the integration of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway line is essential for unlocking the full potential of the Middle Corridor. The BTK provides a shorter and faster route for transporting transit and export cargoes from China to Europe, boasting an impressive annual capacity of five million tons. This means that European logistics operators and freight forwarding companies have a golden opportunity to capitalize on the benefits of the Middle Corridor by increasing their use of this route.
During the summit, Mammadov also discussed the establishment of a cargo base designed to facilitate the movement of goods from the West to the East. He pointed out the potential for transporting goods through Türkiye and the BTK, as well as the ongoing efforts by ADY to enhance this transportation network. Notably, he mentioned the successful modernization of the BTK completed last year and the formation of joint ventures with Georgia and Kazakhstan to ensure the efficient operation and development of the Middle Corridor.
In a significant development, ADY recently launched its first export block train from Azerbaijan to China. This train, consisting of 62 units of 40-foot containers, is set to transport cargo to Xi'an, one of China's largest land ports, by the end of this year. This initiative is expected to provide a substantial boost to the Middle Corridor's development, further solidifying Azerbaijan's position as a key player in international trade.
Moreover, Mammadov highlighted the collaborative efforts among railway organizations from Azerbaijan, Türkiye, Central Asia, and Europe. A consultative meeting of railway administrations' leaders was held in Baku this year, aimed at establishing the Eurasian Transport Route International Association, which includes the Austrian Transport Route. The primary goal of this new route is to increase freight turnover by revitalizing the southern branch of the Middle Corridor.
The Middle Corridor presents a wealth of opportunities for enhancing trade between Asia and Europe. With Azerbaijan at the forefront of these developments, the potential for increased freight transportation and regional cooperation is immense. As logistics companies and stakeholders recognize the advantages of this route, it is likely that we will see a significant uptick in trade activities, benefiting economies on both sides of the corridor. The future of the Middle Corridor looks promising, and it is an exciting time for all involved in this vital trade network.
