BYD recalls 97,000 electric vehicles due to a steering component fault, raising safety concerns in the EV market.

In a significant development for the electric vehicle (EV) market, BYD, a leading Chinese automaker, has announced a recall of nearly 97,000 of its top-selling electric vehicles. This decision comes in response to a manufacturing fault related to the steering control unit, which poses potential fire risks. The recall affects the Dolphin and Yuan Plus models, which were produced in China between November 2022 and December 2023.

The State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) in China confirmed the recall, emphasizing the importance of safety in the automotive industry. BYD has stated that it will instruct its dealers to implement a physical fix for the recalled vehicles. However, the company has not provided details on whether any of the affected EVs were exported to other countries.

Notably, the Dolphin and Yuan Plus models have been BYD's best-sellers in 2023, accounting for an impressive 26% of the company's total sales of 3 million cars for the year, as reported by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers. This recall is particularly rare for BYD, which has rapidly ascended to become the world's largest seller of pure electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. The company had previously recalled a small batch of Tang plug-in hybrids in 2022 due to a battery pack defect that could also lead to fire hazards.

As the electric vehicle market continues to grow, safety remains a paramount concern for manufacturers and consumers alike. This recall serves as a reminder that even the most successful companies must prioritize the safety of their products. For consumers, it is crucial to stay informed about recalls and safety notices, as they can significantly impact vehicle performance and safety. BYD's proactive approach in addressing this issue reflects its commitment to maintaining high safety standards, which is essential for building trust with customers in an increasingly competitive market.
