Northeast India faces a surge in drug trafficking post-Myanmar coup, prompting urgent government action and enhanced law enforcement measures.

The northeastern region of India has been grappling with a significant rise in drug-related activities, particularly following the military coup in Myanmar in February 2021 and the ongoing ethnic unrest in Manipur since May 2023. This troubling trend has raised alarms among officials, who are now emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced vigilance and decisive action to combat the escalating drug menace.

Meghalaya's Social Welfare Minister, Paul Lyngdoh, has pointed out that the ethnic turmoil in neighboring Manipur has directly contributed to the surge in drug trafficking within Meghalaya. He remarked, "This is an unfortunate part because of our region's strategic location and very proximity to the 'Golden Triangle' drug menaces are active in the region." This statement underscores the geographical challenges faced by the northeastern states, which are situated near notorious drug-producing areas.

Lyngdoh further explained that the unrest in Manipur has led to a shift in the illicit drug trade, with traffickers moving their operations into Meghalaya. This shift has posed a significant challenge for the state government, prompting a proactive response from law enforcement agencies. The Minister announced plans to strengthen the Anti Narcotics Task Force (ANTF), which will now be led by a senior retired IPS officer, highlighting the seriousness with which the government is approaching this issue.

In addition to the police department, various other departments are now actively involved in tackling drug-related challenges. The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Sangma, is personally overseeing efforts to address this pressing issue, demonstrating the government's commitment to combating drug trafficking. Lyngdoh mentioned, "We are in the process of constituting the Village Defence Party (VDP). The DREAM (Drug Reduction, Elimination & Action Mission) would be further strengthened," indicating a multi-faceted approach to the problem.

Meanwhile, in Aizawl, senior police officers have reported a significant increase in drug smuggling, particularly heroin and methamphetamine tablets, commonly known as Yaba, from Myanmar into India. The Assam Rifles, responsible for guarding the 510 km unfenced border with Myanmar, have made substantial drug seizures valued at approximately Rs 67 crore in just one week. During this period, they arrested eight drug peddlers, including three from Myanmar, showcasing the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in the region.

In a series of operations, the paramilitary forces confiscated 350 grams of heroin, over 22 kg of methamphetamine tablets, and 7.6 kg of ganja (marijuana), along with a significant amount of illegal Indian currency. The collaboration between the Assam Rifles, Mizoram Police, and Customs officials has been crucial in these operations, as they work together to dismantle drug smuggling networks.

The northeastern states of Mizoram, southern Assam, and Tripura have become key corridors for drug smuggling, given their borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh. Officials have noted that drugs smuggled from Myanmar are often transported through Mizoram to southern Assam and Tripura, where they are further distributed to Bangladesh and other parts of India.

As the situation continues to evolve, it is clear that the drug menace in the northeastern region poses a serious threat not only to public health but also to the stability of the area. The government's proactive measures and community involvement are essential in addressing this crisis. It is imperative for citizens to remain vigilant and support efforts to combat drug trafficking, as a united front is crucial in overcoming this challenge. The fight against drugs is not just a law enforcement issue; it is a societal challenge that requires collective action and awareness.
