Egypt Hosts International Conference on AI in Education

The landscape of education is rapidly evolving, especially with the advent of artificial intelligence (AI). In Egypt, the National Authority for Quality Assurance and Accreditation of Education (NAQAAE) is taking significant steps to ensure that the education system keeps pace with these changes. Recently, the Seventh International Conference of NAQAAE was held in Cairo, focusing on the theme "Quality Education in the Age of Artificial Intelligence." This event gathered key figures from the Egyptian education sector, highlighting the importance of integrating AI into educational practices.

During the conference, Higher Education and Scientific Research Minister Ayman Ashour emphasized the critical role of technology and innovation in reshaping Egypt's higher education system. He stated, "We have 96 colleges for artificial intelligence and computer science, ranging from government, private, and technological universities." This reflects a growing recognition of the need for educational programs that align with the demands of the modern job market.

With over 115 Egyptian universities now offering AI-related programs, the interest among students is evident, with approximately 110,000 students enrolled. This marks a 40% increase from the previous year, showcasing a significant shift towards technology-focused education. Ashour pointed out that to meet global standards, it is essential to adopt interdisciplinary specializations that equip graduates with the necessary skills for future careers.

Furthermore, the conference served as a platform for discussing the establishment of international accreditation bodies in Egypt. This initiative aims to enhance the credibility of academic programs, ensuring they meet both local and international standards. Alaa Ashmawy, President of NAQAAE, announced the creation of two new sectors within the Authority, focusing on the Accreditation of Training Institutions and Programs and the National Qualifications Framework. This framework, which has been in development for ten years, will now be implemented to provide a comprehensive overview of academic qualifications.

The conference also aimed to facilitate the exchange of ideas and experiences regarding the application of AI in education quality. Participants from across Africa gathered to discuss cooperation in quality assurance and accreditation, aligning with the continent's celebration of 2024 as the Year of Education. This collaboration is vital for fostering a robust educational framework that can adapt to the challenges posed by technological advancements.
