Heritage Commission leads Saudi Arabia's archaeological preservation efforts

The Heritage Commission recently held a workshop in Riyadh to discuss archaeological surveying and excavation projects in Saudi Arabia. The workshop brought together partners from universities, organizations, and government agencies to review past exploration projects and plan future surveys and excavations. Abdullah Al-Zahrani, the director general of the antiquities sector at the commission, emphasized the importance of sharing knowledge and discoveries from archaeological work in the country.

Collaborating with Saudi universities and institutions specializing in archaeology, the Heritage Commission is actively working on their 2030 Archaeological Survey and Excavation Projects Plan. This initiative, developed in partnership with national and international universities, aims to document and preserve Saudi Arabia's rich history.

Notable achievements from the past year include the registration of 1,556 archaeological sites, documentation of 1,900 stone structures, and recording 7,600 rock facades with drawings and inscriptions. These efforts highlight the diverse cultural heritage of the region and have received praise from industry experts like Paola Pesaresi from the Diriyah Gate Development Authority.

Pesaresi commended the Heritage Commission for their dedication to preserving heritage for future generations. She stressed the importance of protecting cultural heritage amidst rapid development in the country, emphasizing its role in connecting people with their past, understanding the present, and shaping the future.
