Libya's interior minister announces the full reopening of Ras Ajdir border crossing with Tunisia, emphasizing security measures and plans for additional crossings, enhancing cooperation and trade between the two countries.

Libya's interior minister recently announced the full reopening of the crucial border crossing at Ras Ajdir with Tunisia. This reopening comes after a three-month closure due to armed clashes in the region. Initially, the crossing had been partially reopened in mid-June for specific cases requiring humanitarian aid, medical attention, and special permits from the Tunisian and Algerian interior ministries.

At a ceremony attended by the interior ministers of Tripoli and Tunisia, several ambulances from Libya crossed into Tunisia, marking the resumption of cross-border activities. Emad Trabulsi, the interior minister of the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity, declared that Libyan citizens would be allowed to travel to Tunisia just two hours after the ceremony.

The Tunisian counterpart emphasized that while the crossing is now open for various activities, smuggling remains strictly prohibited. Ras Ajdir serves as a vital frontier crossing in western Libya, facilitating essential travel for medical treatment and trade between the two countries.

Since the 2011 uprising, Libya has been divided between eastern and western factions, each with its own governing bodies. The Government of National Unity, headquartered in Tripoli, holds international recognition but faces opposition from the parliament based in the east.

Trabulsi urged Libyans residing near the western border to support regional security forces in combating smuggling and illegal migration. He also revealed plans to establish two additional border crossings with Tunisia, subject to resource availability. Apart from Ras Ajdir, the two nations currently operate a minor crossing at Wazen-Dhehiba.

The reopening of the Ras Ajdir border crossing signifies a significant step towards enhancing connectivity and cooperation between Libya and Tunisia. This development not only facilitates essential travel and trade but also underscores the ongoing efforts to strengthen security measures and combat illicit activities along the shared border. With the potential establishment of new crossings in the future, the relationship between these neighboring countries is poised to further prosper, fostering mutual benefits and regional stability.
