IOC President Thomas Bach ensures Palestinian athletes' participation at Paris Olympics, highlighting support amid Gaza conflict and distinguishing stance on Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Between six and eight Palestinian athletes are expected to compete at the Paris Olympics, with some set to be invited by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) even if they fail to qualify, according to IOC head Thomas Bach. Bach mentioned that qualification events for the Paris Games are ongoing for various sports. He assured that even if no Palestinian athlete qualifies through the field of play, the National Olympic Committee of Palestine will receive invitations, similar to other national Olympic Committees without qualified athletes.
Bach expressed his expectation of the Palestinian delegation comprising 'six to eight' athletes. He highlighted the IOC's support for Palestinian athletes since the conflict in Gaza began, ensuring their participation in qualifications and training continuation.
Regarding the situation in Gaza, Bach emphasized that the IOC's response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine differs from its stance on Israel and Gaza. Russia faced suspensions and restrictions on its athletes for violating the Olympic truce and annexing Ukrainian sports organizations. Bach clarified that the circumstances between Israel and Palestine are distinct.
He reiterated the IOC's condemnation of the conflict in Gaza and the tragic consequences it has brought. Bach emphasized the organization's consistent stance on condemning both the Russian invasion in Ukraine and the events in Israel and Palestine.
