Major Drug Bust in Singapore: 8kg Heroin Seized in Tengah

SINGAPORE has recently witnessed a significant drug bust, highlighting the ongoing battle against narcotics in the region. On November 7, 2023, the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) conducted a major operation in Tengah, resulting in the seizure of drugs valued at approximately S$1.4 million (around US$1.05 million). This operation underscores the persistent issue of drug trafficking and the authorities' commitment to combatting it.

During the operation, a 32-year-old man was apprehended at the void deck of a residential block near Plantation Crescent. The CNB reported that this individual was found in possession of about 1,027 grams of cannabis and 513 grams of Ice, which is commonly known as crystal methamphetamine. This arrest was just the beginning of a larger crackdown on drug-related activities in the area.

In a separate raid at the same residential block, two additional suspects—a 44-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman—were taken into custody. Authorities discovered a staggering amount of drugs in their possession, including 3,223 grams of cannabis, 7,626 grams of heroin, 2,339 grams of Ice, 235 grams of ecstasy, five bottles of methadone, and 2,590 Erimin-5 tablets. Additionally, S$9,250 in cash was seized from the unit, indicating the scale of their operations.

Moreover, the older man was found with another 95 grams of cannabis, 477 grams of heroin, 169 grams of Ice, and three bottles of methadone in his vehicle. The sheer volume of drugs recovered during these operations raises serious concerns about the drug trade in Singapore and its implications for public safety.

It is crucial to note that under Singaporean law, individuals found guilty of trafficking more than 15 grams of diamorphine (pure heroin), more than 250 grams of methamphetamine, or more than 500 grams of cannabis may face the mandatory death penalty. This strict legal framework reflects the country's zero-tolerance policy towards drug trafficking, aiming to deter potential offenders and protect society from the devastating effects of drug abuse.
