Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, is set to transform its urban landscape with the launch of the Riyadh Metro, which is now the largest urban rail network in the Middle East. This ambitious project is a significant part of Saudi Vision 2030, aimed at improving the quality of life for residents and tackling the growing issue of traffic congestion in the city.

The Riyadh Metro will officially begin operations on Sunday, starting with three lines: the Blue line, which connects Olaya Street to Al Batʼha; the Yellow line, running along King Khalid International Airport Road; and the Purple line, covering Abdul Rahman bin Awf Road and Al-Shaikh Hassan Bin Hussain Street. Following this initial phase, the Red line and Green line are scheduled to commence operations on December 15, while the Orange line will start on January 5, 2025.

This project has been a long time in the making, with its announcement dating back to April 2012. The Saudi Cabinet approved the public transport initiative and established a high-level committee to oversee its development. Despite facing numerous challenges, including the global pandemic, the project has finally come to fruition. Contracts worth approximately $22.5 billion were awarded to three global consortiums in 2013 to bring this vision to life.

One of the standout features of the Riyadh Metro is its commitment to sustainability. The metro system will utilize energy-efficient trains and stations, incorporating technologies like regenerative braking to minimize energy consumption. Additionally, many stations will be equipped with solar panels, and the entire metro system will rely on electricity sourced from renewable energy.

Maher Sheira, who supervises the digital infrastructure for the King Abdulaziz Public Transport Project, emphasized the metro's potential impact on traffic reduction. He stated, "Our target is to reduce traffic within the city by up to 30 percent." With the capacity to transport up to 3.6 million passengers daily, the metro aims to encourage residents to shift from private car use to public transportation.

Sheira also highlighted the environmental benefits of this transition. He noted that if 100,000 passengers switch from cars to public transport, it could save over 3 million trees annually. This statistic underscores the significant impact that public transportation can have on reducing carbon emissions and promoting a healthier environment.

The integration of the metro and bus systems is another key aspect of the project. Passengers will be able to use the same ticket for both modes of transport, ensuring a seamless travel experience. Sheira remarked, "To ensure quality, the design of both networks was focused on delivering first-class standards." This commitment to quality is evident throughout the system, from the stations to the trains and buses.
