A rocket attack on the Ain Assad base in Iraq injured multiple US personnel, raising concerns about escalating tensions in the region and potential Iranian retaliation.

On Monday, a rocket attack targeted the Ain Assad base in Iraq, injuring multiple US personnel. This incident adds to the already heightened tensions in the region, particularly concerning the potential for an Iranian counterattack on Israel. The Ain Assad base, located in western Iraq, is home to American troops and personnel from the US-led coalition fighting against the Daesh group.

A US defense spokesperson confirmed, "There was a suspected rocket attack today against US and coalition forces at the base. Initial indications are that several US personnel were injured." Following the attack, base personnel are conducting a damage assessment, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

According to an Iraqi military source, multiple rockets were fired at the base, with some landing inside and others hitting a nearby village, although no damage was reported in the village. A commander from a pro-Iran armed group stated that at least two rockets targeted the base, but did not specify who was responsible for the attack.

Such attacks were common during the early stages of the conflict between Israel and Hamas, but they had largely ceased until now. The recent rocket fire raises concerns about a possible retaliation from Iran and its allies against Israel, especially following the killing of key Hamas and Hezbollah figures in strikes attributed to Israel. Both Iran and Hezbollah have vowed to retaliate, escalating fears of a broader regional conflict.

The "Axis of Resistance," which includes Iranian-aligned groups from Iraq and Yemen’s Houthis, has been increasingly involved in the ongoing war, which has lasted nearly ten months. The latest rocket attack occurred shortly after US forces conducted a strike on combatants attempting to launch drones that posed a threat to American and allied troops. This strike, which Iraqi sources reported resulted in four deaths, marked the first American military action in Iraq since February.

In recent weeks, there have been two other attacks targeting bases housing US and allied forces in Iraq, occurring on July 16 and 25. Prior to these incidents, US troops had not faced attacks in Iraq and Syria since April. However, during the initial months of the Israel-Hamas conflict, US forces were targeted over 175 times. The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a coalition of pro-Iran groups, claimed responsibility for most of these attacks, stating they were in solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza.

In January, a drone strike attributed to these groups resulted in the deaths of three US soldiers at a base in Jordan. In response, US forces launched numerous strikes against Iran-backed fighters in Iraq and Syria. Since then, attacks on US troops had significantly decreased.

In an effort to ease tensions, Baghdad has engaged in discussions with Washington regarding the future of the US-led coalition's mission in Iraq, as Iran-backed groups continue to demand a withdrawal of US forces. Currently, the US military maintains approximately 2,500 troops in Iraq and 900 in Syria.

The recent rocket attack on the Ain Assad base highlights the fragile security situation in Iraq and the broader Middle East. As tensions rise between Iran and Israel, the potential for further conflict remains a significant concern. It is crucial for all parties involved to seek diplomatic solutions to prevent escalation and ensure the safety of both military personnel and civilians in the region.
